Hull taxi driver splashes out a small fortune on city's 'first electric cab'

A Hull taxi driver has made an expensive decision to do his bit for the environment. John Jalrize, 34, a self-employed black cab driver, splashed out on a new electric hybrid hackney carriage.

He believes he is the first cabby in Hull to make the switch and thinks it is a positive move for the city. “It’s something different in Hull, no one else has got them," he said. “I’m not saying that everyone has to do it but I think it is better for the city. “It’s good for the environment so it’s good for everyone."

Mr Jalrize’s LEVC TX is able to run on electric charge but can also take petrol. The vehicle cost him £70,000 but Mr Jalrize believes the new car will be worth the investment.

"I think it’s worth it," he said. "It’s a hybrid of electric and petrol so you’re also going to get your money back saving on fuel. “It’s very important for the future of my family and kids. "It cost me a lot of money but we can see the damage cars are doing to the world. I prefer to be clean.”

Mr Jalrize moved to Hull as a refugee from Afghanistan in 2002. He said he loves the city and he’s pleased to be able to give something back. “All of my friends have moved to London or Birmingham but I like it here," he said. “It’s a small city I can find my way around easily and I’ve never had any problems with people in Hull.”
