Police investigate rape after Christmas party in Brighton

DETECTIVES are investigating reports of a rape after a Christmas party.

The 31-year-old victim took a taxi home after drinking with colleagues in Brighton and it is alleged the driver followed her into her flat and raped her.

She had been picked up in Western Road, near the junction with Queen's Square, at about 1.30am on Saturday by a driver.

It is understood, according to Sussex Police, the car he was driving had green and white door panels.

The force has said that the victim's friends organised for her to take a taxi home "due to her level of intoxication".

She was then taken to her home in Worthing where it is reported that the driver raped her.

Detective inspector Steve Cobbett, of the safeguarding investigations unit, said: “This is a highly distressing incident and the victim has been seen and supported by specially trained officers from our safeguarding investigations unit.

"Enquiries are ongoing and we are keen for anyone who may hold any information about this incident to come forward.”

The suspect is described as being of Middle Eastern appearance with short, dark, thinning hair and short, dark facial hair.

He is described by the police as having "big round eyes, being aged in his 40s or 50s, being of medium build and having a large stomach".

He was wearing a zip-up top which was light at the top and dark at the bottom.

The force also reminded party-goers "to stay safe" over the Christmas period.

Det Insp Cobbett said: "I’d also like to urge everyone to stay safe and vigilant, especially during this festive season, when there are likely to be more social occasions.

"Only get in a licensed taxi, keep in contact with friends and family, and let them know when you are safely home.”

Anyone with any information is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting Operation Bordon.

Man arrested after woman raped by taxi driver after work party

A MAN has been arrested in connection with a rape.

Officers are investigating an incident in which it is alleged a woman was raped at her home in Worthing by a taxi driver who had given her a lift home.

Now Sussex Police have revealed a man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

A spokesman said: “Following an intensive investigation, and information from the public, officers went to an address in Newhaven on New Year’s Eve and arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of rape.

“He is currently in custody for interview and further enquiries.

“The victim is continuing to be supported by specially trained officers.”

The 31-year-old woman took a taxi home at about 1.30am on Friday, December 20, after drinking with colleagues in Brighton.

She was picked up in Western Road, near the junction with Queen’s Square.

Police said it was believed the car had green and white door panels.

The force has said the woman’s friends organised for her to take a taxi home “due to her level of intoxication”.

She was then taken to her home in Worthing where it is reported that the driver raped her.

Detective inspector Steve Cobbett, of the safeguarding investigations unit, said: “This is a highly distressing incident and the victim has been seen and supported by specially trained officers from our safeguarding investigations unit.

“We are keen for anyone who may hold any information about this incident to come forward.”

Uber driver faces Brighton court charged with raping woman after Christmas party

A Brighton and Hove cabbie who works for Uber has been charged with raping a woman after dropping her home from a work Christmas party. Ajmal Hazraty, 37, is due to appear in court this morning (Saturday 4 January) charged with two counts of raping the 31-year-old woman.

He is alleged to have raped her twice at her flat in Worthing in the early hours of Saturday 21 December.

Sussex Police said: “A man has been charged with raping a woman at an address in Worthing on (Saturday) 21 December. “Ajmal Hazraty, 37, a taxi driver, of Haven Way, Newhaven, is due to appear in custody at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (4 January) charged with two offences of raping the 31-year-old woman at her flat in Worthing in the early hours of Saturday 21 December.

“The charge, authorised by the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service), follows an investigation by detectives from the West Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit.”

The attack is alleged to have happened after the victim was picked up in Western Road, close to the junction with Queen Square, at around 1.30am on the Saturday before Christmas.

Two days after the alleged attack Detective Inspector Steve Cobbett said: “This is a highly distressing incident and the victim has been seen and supported by specially trained officers from our Safeguarding Investigations Unit.”

Well a 'taxi' picking up in Brighton with "green and white door panels" was always likely to be a B&H-licensed HC:

Of course, the *door panels* aren't actually green and white, but it always seemed probable that that was simply a vague, inexact reference to a B&H HC.

Taxi driver accused of raping Worthing passenger released from custody

A TAXI driver accused of raping a passenger has been banned from his cab.

Ajmal Hazraty is accused of raping a woman at her home in Worthing after driving her from Western Road, Brighton.

Hazraty has now been told he is not allowed to enter Sussex, or drive customers in a cab, after being released on bail by Lewes Crown Court on Friday.

Hazraty, 37, of Haven Way, Newhaven, is charged with two counts of raping the 31-year-old woman at her Worthing flat on Saturday December 21.

Judge Anne Arnold allowed him to be released on conditional bail on Friday.

He was ordered to live at an address in Kingston-upon-Thames and report to police everyday.

He was given a curfew banning him from leaving the address between 7pm and 7am and told not to contact the alleged victim.

He was also banned from “driving for hire or reward” and told he is only allowed to return to Sussex for court appearances and to see his solicitor.

He is due to return to Lewes Crown Court on January 31 to enter his plea to the charges.

No doubt the good folks of Kingston-upon-Thames are delighted at that news.

Image

AN AFGHAN taxi driver pleaded not guilty to raping a woman he picked up and took home from her work Christmas party.

Ajmal Hazraty, 37, denies two counts of raping the woman after picking her up in Brighton on December 21, last year.

Mr Hazraty, of Kingston, is accused of raping the 31-year-old woman after taking her back to her home in Worthing.

The woman was picked up from Western Road after a night out with work colleagues.

She told Sussex Police she was raped in her flat.

Mr Hazraty was bailed to return to Lewes Crown Court for trial in September.
