Dundee taxi driver suspended amid allegations of prolonged theft from elderly woman

https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/lo ... rly-woman/

A Dundee taxi driver has been suspended as police investigate claims he stole money from an elderly woman.

Dundee City Council’s licensing committee suspended the man, referred to only in papers as Mr A B, when the allegations were brought to light late last year.

The suspension was continued when the committee met this week to review the case because the police investigation is ongoing.

It is understood the probe centres on alleged incidents over a “two to three year period”. The driver has not been charged with any offence.

A council source confirmed the suspension will remain in place “indefinitely” until police decide whether to take matters further.

The source said: “He remains currently suspended but he is still waiting to be charged.

“He will be suspended indefinitely until the police investigation is done.

“I believe it was reported when a relative of the woman saw a bank statement and became suspicious. I think he made a report to the police towards the end of the year.”

Council documents for the licensing committee meeting earlier this week said a police letter was sent to councillors relating to the alleged conduct of the man “during the currency of his Taxi Driver’s Licence and Taxi Operator’s Licence”.

It states: “Having heard the representatives of the Chief Constable and consideration of the advice of the legal officer, the (licensing) sub-committee agreed that the taxi driver’s licence held by Mr A B be suspended with immediate effect and that a suspension hearing be held in due course in relation to the fitness of Mr A B to be the holder of a taxi driver’s licence.

“No action would be taken in relation to the taxi operator’s licence held by Mr A B during the intervening period.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm that a report has been received and enquiries are ongoing.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”

A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “We can confirm that he has been suspended.”

The taxi firm the driver is believed to work for was contacted for comment but did not do so.

The operator's licence in Scotland is the plate.

So interesting that his badge was suspended, but the plate is unaffected :?

I wonder how many similar situations happen to those outlined in the above allegations.

It would not surprise me if it was quite a few.
