Last night my son was parked up in a roadside parking bay whilst waiting for a job. There was a big 4X4 parked behind him facing the opposite direction. " chaps got in the 4X4 and the driver must have selected the wrong gear because he flew back into our car. He then just drove off. However he only went around the corner 30 yards away and they got out and went down an alleyway. My son followed them to the alley and then decided to call the police. Now the police station is only about 75 yards from where all this happened. I then arrived at the scene just as the 2 chaps and a women came back to the vehicle. When confronted by my son they denied all knowledge at first but soon backed down when my son said he was in the vehicle at the time. The police arrived at about the same time, 3 on foot and 2 in a car. They breathalysed the chap who had been driving and arrested him on suspicion of drink driving. Now this is where it gets messy. The woman said it was her car and that the chap driving did not have her permission and was not covered by her insurance.
So the chap is looking at TWOC, driving without insurance and possibly drink driving. Meanwhile we are left with a poorly Toyota Prius.

I suspect the lady might change her tune when she realises the fella could do time for the theft.

Also she might need to consider that someone who lies to police is more often than not prosecuted for 'Perverting the course of Justice'.

No, she was in the pub where all 3 had been drinking.

The vehicle was insured if not you can claim through the MIB.

He was moving the car from a space where if it had stayed there until the morning it would have got a ticket to somewhere where it wouldn't have got a ticket.

The police will ask how the fella got the keys.

If he took them without the knowledge of the lady, then clearly that's theft.

If she gave them to him then she is equally liable, IMO.

The damage seems to be less than it could have been. It seems that the bumper has an insert in it where the tow bar hit so they may only have to pay for this insert, maybe a bracket behind the bumper and a couple of clips that hold the bumper in at the side. no painting necessary.

I think someone has been a very lucky boy. It would seem that he passed the police attitude test. firstly he was just under the drink limit by a whisker and he agreed to pay for the damage to our car which was around £250 (he has already paid the garage) and the police gave him a caution.

I suspect he will get a fixed penalty for the insurance offence.

A police caution stays on record for ever, a PCN or points disappear after a fixed term.

NEVER accept a police caution for anything. But maybe it was this chap's only get out of jail card.
