Lincoln taxi firm offers NHS discount during coronavirus outbreak

A taxi firm in Lincoln is trying to help ease the financial pressure on NHS staff by offering discounts to journeys to and from work during the coronavirus outbreak.

Direct Cars (Lincoln) Limited has confirmed that it is offering a 20% discount providing customers state they are NHS staff when booking, and produce their NHS card to the driver.

The taxi firm said: “This is a gesture of goodwill to all of our hardworking NHS staff during these trying times.”

However, it is understood that there are fears within the industry that having a ride after someone so exposed to the virus, such as NHS staff, could lead to passing it on to vulnerable people or those with underlying conditions.

A2B Cars Lincoln has decided to take its own approach to the outbreak, saying it has invested into the safety of its passengers and drivers by bringing in a daily steam clean to every one of its vehicles.

It has brought in professional equipment and a certified operator to carry this out.

All of its vehicles will also be equipped with sanitising products and respirators for drivers to protect them, their families and also passengers. They believe health care workers should also wear a face mask.

Not sure that would help in the way it looks - wouldn't any infection be inactive within a few hours anyway, if that's the right way to put it?

Actually, looks like the virus could be active on surfaces for quite a few hours, so steam cleaning could help, although by no means foolproof, unless of course you did it after every trip.

And even then...

and how long to dry out the cars again ? Cannot see the seats and carpets being dry and fit for use in the morning. If you could get it using tcp on the door handles and grabs once or twice a day might be effective.

The thing is though we have only had 4 cases in lincolnshire and where I live none within a 25 miles radius so just doing the basics for now but if it gets closer will start regular disinfecting

Suspect it's all a bit exaggerated, though, and more PR than medical rigour.

Just like all these businesses putting out press statements about the measures they're taking to promote cleanliness etc.

The toilets at our local Morrison's, for example, I prefer *not* to wash my hands there at the best of times, and not really sure I'm encouraged to do so now. Of course, they've got all the signs up telling you to wash your hands, but just an empty handwash dispenser the last couple of times I've been in.

So if a supermarket can't even provide handwash…

To be fair, maybe people keep nicking them
