I have just been reading about an explosion at a petrochemical plant just outside Tarragona in Spain. Looking at google maps it is in the same place as a similar explosion that happened on election night in June 1987. We were on the first night of our first family holiday abroad and staying in a hotel just north of Salou. It was one hell of an explosion and the resulting fire was so big that it looked like it was just up the road. It turned out to be about 15 kilometres away.
Fancy it happening again.

not really H & S standards probably a bit lower in Spain

Spanish chemical plant explosion kills man 3km away

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51113132

Two people were killed and eight others injured following an explosion at a chemical plant in Spain's autonomous Catalonia region, officials say.

One of those killed suffered a fatal injury when an apartment block located about 3km (two miles) away partially collapsed, Spanish media report.

Officials say Tuesday's blast south of Tarragona was probably sparked by a chemical accident.
Authorities said that no toxic substances were released.

Nearby residents were, however, initially urged to stay indoors after the explosion set off a huge fire.
Dozens of firefighters worked through the night and into Wednesday to tackle the blaze at the Industrias Químicas del Óxido de Etileno plant.

Ethylene Oxide :? dangerous stuff but a major component of washing powder which is why it's manufactured we all need to wash our clothes

And if you look at the CCTV footage on the BBC site that is one huge BLEVE

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-51383435

An elderly woman has reversed a car through the front door of a house.

She wedged the vehicle into the front of the property in a village near Devizes in Wiltshire on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters took two hours to rescue her and got her out from the back of the car. She was treated at the scene by the South Western Ambulance Service.

A spokesman for Devizes Fire Station said it had been "tricky" to free the trapped driver.

A building control officer had been requested to check the building, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

this takes stupidity to whole new level

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-51602655

A US daredevil pilot has been killed during an attempted launch of a homemade steam powered rocket in the Californian desert.
"Mad" Mike Hughes, 64, crash-landed his steam-powered rocket shortly after take-off near Barstow on Saturday.
A video on social media shows a rocket being fired into the sky before plummeting to the ground nearby.
Hughes was well-known for his belief that the Earth was flat. He hoped to prove his theory by going to space.

ps the video in the story is of an earlier attempt which he survived just

A more light hearted pandemic story

Vicar sets arm on fire during first ‘virtual’ service

March 22, 2020 9:07:07 AM
One local vicar felt the heat while recording his first “virtual” service, after accidentally setting his arm on fire with a church candle.

Simon Beach, 61, vicar of St Budeaux Parish Church in Plymouth, was not harmed during the mishap and was able to see the funny side – posting the “out-take” online.

In the video, Mr Beach is seen leaning in to deliver the final part of his sermon before exclaiming calmly: “Oh dear, I’ve just caught fire.”

He said he had been teased by fellow vicars, who joked about “being on fire for Jesus” and telling him that he “should have waited for Pentecost”.

“People have laughed and laughed, really,” he told the PA news agency.

jug ears has covid 19

The Prince of Wales has tested positive for coronavirus, Clarence House has announced.

Prince Charles, 71, is displaying mild symptoms "but otherwise remains in good health", a spokesman said, adding that the Duchess of Cornwall, 72, has been tested but does not have the virus.

Charles and Camilla are now self-isolating at Balmoral.

Interesting that Camilla, who clearly shares a lot of his space hasn't got the virus too.

But like all the others with this bug I wish him a speedy recovery.
