Now I get the world is in a mess, but Lewes DC have decided currently you don't need to re-license to carry on working, all you need to to tell them that you might. ](*,)

But doesn't that at least require slightly more effort on behalf of the applicant compared to other councils that are automatically extending licences? :-k

I think they might want you to fill out a form - even if they dont charge you - its the cost that needs justified

Maybe, but those councils that are extending, and for the record I doubt the legality of even that, at least the drivers and vehicles are licensed.

Lewes DC are saying it's ok for unlicensed and unchecked drivers to work willy nilly.

I'm told by a very good source that some at Lewes DC are slightly miffed by some in the B&H trade calling them a 'Basket Case' licensing department.

What would any reasonable person (maybe a chap on the omnibus in Clapham for example) call a council that will allow a person to drive, for hire and reward, a taxi or PH who isn't licensed, maybe hasn't an up-to-date DBS and maybe doesn't have an up-to-date medical?

What would that same fella on the bus call a council that will allow a vehicle to work for hire and reward as a taxi or PH that isn't licensed, maybe not insured and maybe not safe mechanically?

Personally I think 'Basket Case' isn't that unreasonable.

Council has been overrun with Uber application to work in Brighton.
They are happy to take the money but not do the admin.

M your becoming more of a 50's throwback every year

Seriously though with our council you have to complete the renewal process but without a plate being issued and herein lies the problem which needs solving rapidly there shouldn't be 500 councils making it up there should be ONE directive from the government and all councils falling into line

And what happens when the lock down is finally lifted in a years time at the rate we are failing to get this under control ? how are they going to get everyone back on track ?

We haven't had to have our vehicles tested but we do still have to fill out the application and pay the fee and we do get issued with a new plate.

It is a legal term for Joe Public.

To me the minimum requirement is a sheet of paper saying you are currently licensed.

Clearly we can all differ on what requirements are needed in addition to that piece of paper, but what Lewes DC are doing is akin to sticking their heads in the sand and hoping for the best.

To be honest can't really see a whole lot of difference between the Lewes scenario and one where a council is automatically extending licences.

As regards stuff like DBS, roadworthiness, medicals and insurance I can't see that it makes any substantive difference.

And even during normal times there's always a risk with stuff like that - it's just that it's impractical to check such things every week or so, so reasonable compromises are found.

And with the extraordinary circumstances at the moment, it's arguable that what's happening is reasonable.

But what it all does underline (as per usual) is that a national approach would be preferable to hundreds of different councils all with their own take on things.

(Just remembered when reading the news article about the Inverclyde scenario that I meant to reply to this a few days ago.)

Well one is 100% illegal, and the other of doubtful legality.

A taxi/PH licensing authority's main duty is to protect the traveling public, by allowing vehicles and drivers to work for hire and reward whilst unlicensed is disgraceful IMO, to actually promote it is IMO criminal.

All the above can be sent to a licensing department online, and councils can return via the same method.

A taxi/PH safety test can be adjusted temporary to be a simple MOT, of which there are plenty testing stations working.

Most councils, if not the vast majority, are coping, Lewes DC are not because they haven't got anyone who has any idea about taxi licensing law.

Until someone has an accident and the insurance company pi** themselves laughing.
