Birmingham City Council has quietly scrapped plans to install CCTVs into taxis and cabs despite a report that shows it could prevent grooming and child exploitation.
The proposals were unveiled last April by the authority’s licensing committee following a review into the Rotherham grooming scandal. However, the plans were axed because the £500 per vehicle cost could see drivers applying for licences at neighbouring councils – where no such policy exists.
However, Cllr Lynda Clinton (Lab, Tyburn) opposed the scrapping of the plans saying that they can be both beneficial to passengers and cab drivers. She said: “Apart from the cost I can’t see why any driver would not wish to see themselves protected, and their passengers, because they are vulnerable to allegations.

“We also may have drivers who sadly are picking up the same people on a regular basis and that can turn into grooming."

”The council said it could introduce the CCTV plans by last November following consultation with taxi and private hire firms."
A Birmingham City spokesman said: “A report outlining proposals for CCTV cameras to be installed in Hackney Carriage and private hire vehicles was considered by Licensing and Public Protection Committee in April 2017.

it's all about the money and the fact that if half the drivers are registered elsewhere the scheme is pointless

The cost is clearly an issue, but that can be mitigated by cheaper insurance as happens down here.

You can also rent CCTV for about £20 a month if that suits your need.

Authorities that mandate CCTV do so on the basis of customer safety, they have a point, but I've always been on the side of drivers safety, and from my experience CCTV saves drivers livelihoods, and on occasion their well-being.

When B&H first mandated CCTV in taxi/PH I would say 80%+ of the trade opposed it, I would say now that percentage is less than 5%.

Once again I get the cost issue, but FFS it's a no brainer.

where can i rent from?

i think at £600 its way overpriced, swapping from 1 car to another at £150 is also too expensive

The only thing you can get round here are Halfords Dashcams there are no installers of CCTV

Brighton is UNIQUE in having a CCTV camera supplier and he certainly wouldn't travel

Under the DPA. dashcams cannot record INTO the vehicle nor record audio, and they arent encrypted..

I think if you have a data controller license you can have dashcams pointing inwards.

A number of drivers down here do have them in addition to the council required CCTV.

In respect of CCTV fitters/suppliers surely the local meter fitters/suppliers must offer some kind of CCTV.

Yes...

The link in your subsequent post is for LA mandated or maintained systems where they (or a Company on their behalf) are the Data Controller.

I am Registered with the ICO (not Licensed) and therefore I am the Data Controller, not the Local Authority.
