Hi guys,

I'm a single parent of two and interested in being a Taxi Driver, I have had my full licence for a year, I passed Oct 2004. With hours to suit this job would be ideal. I've got a good friend who does taxi driving as well and she thinks it's great!

Anyone recommend this job?

Thank You in advance

Kirsty

recommend it ? well that depends !.

kirsty... take it your a female ?

if so..taxis are a whole differant ball game .

if your under 25 you might struggle to get an operator to take you on as the insuanrce will be sky high.
esp if you have only had your driving licence for 2 yr or so.

working for someone else is the way to start...to see if you will like it ....and to see if you will make the money you think you will make  after you have paid your way-in to operator.
but there are a number of thing to consider...
i,m suprised none of the other guys on here have jumped in on your thread to give more of an insight !!

its took me around 8 yrs or so working for other companys to feel my way around.
now i have started my OWN p/h company and other spin offs off of that as well.
take time and learn ...the rewards are there

Don't see any council or insurance company touching anyone who only has 15 months driving experience.

But guess someone will prove me wrong.

I don't know - I always thought it was the age that was the more significant factor, as outlined by bigj5555, but I may be wrong.

Well there are so many ifs and buts that you can babble on for hours about this kind of thing - that's why we wrote the FAQ.

However, I can't see people like Kirsty making a fortune from the trade though, because while the flexible nature may help her it also helps others thus this drives down earnings. And you have to work the weekends and late nights to make the big bucks as well, and you don't see many women out late at night, especially in the big cities, and also if they have kids, as Kirsty does.

In my experience there aren't that many 'career' taxi drivers out there - most tend to be Kirstyites or similar

Probably why there aren't many female taxi drivers in London either - you don't do the KOL so you can fit a few hours in before the school run.

However, Kirsty probably knows how much she'll earn anyway, since she has a friend in the trade, who will probably be able to tell her more about the job in her locality (and from a female perspective) than we can.

So if the earnings are enough for her, then go for it!

By the way, I'm kind of assuming that Kirsty fits my stereotype of a woman taxi driver, so if my stereotype offends in any way then I do apologise :)
