Police said a white Mercedes A200 AMG smashed into a white Toyota Prius in Ashton-under-Lyne at around 11pm on Sunday night.
Emergency services raced to the scene and the rear seat passenger in the taxi, a man aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The taxi driver, aged in his 30s, suffered minor injuries.
Three people in the Mercedes fled on foot, police said.
An investigation is underway and officers are appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
The crash happened on Oldham Road near the junction with Newmarket Street and Wilshaw Lane and the roads remained closed for several hours this morning.
Bus company Stagecoach said it was diverting its 231 service via Henrietta St, Albion Way and Taunton Rd in both directions until further notice.
Detective Sergeant Marie Eldred, from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was a serious collision that has left a man fighting for his life in hospital.
"We asking anyone with any information or may have seen anything to contact us."
