Police investigating how taxi became stuck on tram tracks

Police are investigating the circumstances into how a taxi became stuck on tram tracks in the West Midlands.

The black cab was towed away from the scene in Birmingham city centre, after attempts to push the vehicle free were unsuccessful.

The vehicle became stuck on the line near Snow Hill Plaza and St Chad's Queensway at around 7.50am yesterday.

No passengers were present inside the taxi but tram services were delayed for several hours.

West Midlands Police said the driver has been reported for driving offences.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We got a call at 7.50am yesterday reporting that a black cab had driven onto the tram lines by Snow Hill Plaza and St Chad's Queensway, and became stuck on the tram lines.

"The car had bottomed out and could not be driven off.

"Officers tried to push the taxi off the tracks but were unable to move it. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

"West Midlands Travel vehicle recovery unit was called in to winch the vehicle off the lines.

"It was moved at around 11.15am [on Saturday]. The driver has been reported for driving offences."

Well looking at Google maps the tram tracks are completely separate apart from one point where they cross the road. That location is colmore circus so I really am not sure what the driver thought he was doing attempting to drive up the tracks no wonder he got stuck! They run alongside the former GWR main line to Birkenhead above the roads and canals. From the picture he was quite some way past the nearest intersection so it was not a wrong turn

And Balbeer Singh, a worker at Birmingham City Council, claimed: “The driver was from Walsall, who got lost.
