can someone explain the lockdown MOT 6 month extensions?

if someones MOT was feb 1st 2020 and the DVLA site says it expires feb 1st 2021 is it getting any extension?

I think it just covered vehicles whose MoT was due during the first lockdown. Can't remember the dates, but if your MoT was due one day before the thing ended, then you'd get six months extra. If MoT fell due a day after things were back to normal, then you'd need to do it then.

So pretty daft if you ask me. They should have just extended the whole lot by six months, not just those falling due during the first lockdown period.

It also means, effectively, that the MoT garages will be doing double the normal number of Mots for a few months - those falling due normally, and those six months behind.

So presumably there will be very few MoTs due in the middle part of the year for a few years now, until older cars are scrapped and new ones take their place?

Who knows - can't be bothered looking it up, but that's how it sounds to me.

Never affected me, both cars had taxi tests+MOT twice in 12 months, not sure licensing would accept a MOT extension for plating anyway

MOT testing station never closed here. Everything just carries on as normal.

Maybe so, but if your MoT fell due during April, May, June or July 2020 then you would have been entitled to a six month extension.

Of course, any council can specify more stringent requirements for HCs and PHVs, so the rules for the public generally wouldn't have necessarily extended to the trade, depending on each council.

But for motorists generally, "the grace period covered vehicles with MOTs that were due to expire between 30 March and 31 July 2020. Vehicles that fell into this category had their MOT expiry dates extended by six months."

But if the last day for the six-month extension was 31 July, then presumably they'll all have been MoTd by now. Unless they're getting one done today
