Like the Brum case, no mention of the licensing angle here, but he's been banned from driving anyway, and presumably little doubt about the destiny of his badge

Drunken taxi driver walked into lamppost in front of police before driving off

The off-duty driver was watched by police as he staggered into a lamppost in Sunderland - before going to drive off in his car

A tipsy taxi driver walked straight into a lamppost before getting behind the wheel of his car.

Darren Young, 35, walked bang into the street light in Sunderland city centre after a night out with his partner.

His drunken mishap was seen by police, who watched as he then jumped into his Citroen Berlingo and drove off at 2am on Saturday, June 19.

They soon pulled him over and he was found to be over twice the drink-drive limit, a court heard.

And they also uncovered two wraps of cocaine from his wallet during a post-arrest police station search, prosecutor Sarah Malkinson said.

Young, of St Johns Vale, Pennywell, Sunderland, claimed a passenger had left them and he had not got around to informing police.

Ms Malkinson told magistrates in South Tyneside: “Officers observed the defendant staggering from side to side.

“He walked into a lamppost, and he then got into a vehicle and drove towards the Park Lane bus station.

“When stopped, he claimed he had only had one pint. He was taken into custody.

“While there, two bags of cocaine were found on him.”

The court heard Young gave a reading of 75mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath. The legal limit is 35mcgs.

Chris Wilson, defending, said Young had been out with his partner but an argument had ensued.

He added: “His partner walked away and left him, he hadn’t intended to drive. He made the erroneous decision to do so.

“He was searched, and two wraps of cocaine were found in his wallet.

“He is a taxi driver, and he had found the wraps in his vehicle. He hadn’t had the chance to surrender them to the police.”

Young pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and possession of drugs.

For the drink-drive offence, he was banned from driving for 20 months and fined £120, with £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

And for drugs possession, he was fined £100 – and magistrates ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the cocaine.
