Hackney surging

Quote:
Dear Customers,
After carefully analysing the increased demand for taxis, we have decided to make these changes.
Given the economic condition & driver’s shortage in every Taxi Company in the UK, it was a very critical decision and we want you to understand how our pricing works and why we have taken this decision.

HOW OUR DYNAMIC SURGE PRICING MODEL WORKS?

When a customer books a ride, he/she receives an estimated fare for the trip. Due to dynamic surge pricing, you will see a different cost than the fare of the same trip you took some days ago. It happens because prices are being calculated by considering a number of different variables including rush hour, customer's rating, route, distance, traffic, and high demand. It's an automated system and prices fluctuate according to demand.

WHY IS DYNAMIC SURGE PRICING USED?
It is used to encourage drivers to get on the road, fill the demand and cover the rides. In dynamic surge pricing, as more rides are taken and demand is becoming more manageable the fare reverts back to normal.
Dynamic surge pricing allows us to make sure that the supply of drivers is enough to complete the demand for the rides.
Our priority will always be to help get as many customers to their destinations as quickly as possible.
The nationwide shortage of taxi drivers has been widely reported in the press and a simple Google search allows customers to independently verify the above.
The cost of transport affects us all, price rises are never popular.
We has had the same minimum fare for many years.
We have not simply decided to put fares up because it suits us.
The majority of fares are normal most of the time.
Your business is important to us but we must strike a fair balance between riders and our drivers; both of who are our customers.
Thank you for using us, we are committed to serving our community with a quality service and appreciate your business and continued support.

Easy to tell from the clunky English and poor explanation that it's not Uber or Bolt [-(

For a start, it makes it sound like this pricing model will be used all the time, whereas it's only near the end that it states: "The majority of fares are normal most of the time." (And even that sounds a bit repititious.)

So I suspect many customers will read it all as meaning fare rises across the board, and fairly substantial rises at that, while in reality fares will be unchanged the majority of the time (I'm guessing).

So is that saying unpopular customers will be paying higher prices? Even if that's true, not sure it's in the PR handbook to actually tell customers...

Do Uber base surge-pricing on customer ratings?

Anyway, if it's an HC circuit then presumably they're discounting fares as it is, and the intended surge prices can't be very high, or at least nothing like in the Uber league. Or maybe they don't know the law.

Don't think they do, but I suspect drivers cherry-pick big time when it's busy.

And I would sooner have a lower-priced job with a good punter than a higher-priced one with an iffy one.

In fact if the firm I work with had a punter rating then I wouldn't even think of taking a job from a lower-rated one.

Is the correct answer.

And at least one that sets the rates but drivers ignore them and charge what they like. A customer told my son last night that she was charged £7.50 for a journey that on rate 1 is £5.00. The driver did use the meter so they must have had it on rate 3 to get to £7.50 this is after we have just had a new rate set that puts us at joint 90 on the league table from being over 300 previously.
