Where do you guys park up? and where do you like parking?

you like going into the base having a tea and a chat or do you like being sent out to areas where you sit and wait for a job in your car?

Are there all drivers here or are there any owners?

The folks on here are a real mixed bag, a little bit of everything.

As for the office, I go there once a week, which is more than enough.

you must make well over 600 a week.

my drivers make 600, 6 days a week

Well some of the lads say they do that at the weekend.

And some of the thicko's believe them.

as far as im concerned, you can not make 600 on a weekend, thats unless you are doing double shifts.

our shifts are 10 hours a day for 4 days and then its open shift on friday and saturday.

on average they take 75-90 a normal day. times 4 = 300 to 360

then on a friday they take 120 to 180 and on saturday 150 to 190.

so its roughly 570 to 730 in a normal week

they work between them margins

id love to provide work everytime they finish a job but in taxis all teh jobs come together and the quiet time comes at once aswell so its a lot of jobs or no jobs.

Why the interest in earnings ?

It is usuallly only the Inland Revenue that seem to take an interest

inland revenue...i have enough trouble dodging them than be accused of being them is an insult.

anyhow if they get paid to work after 5pm then i think were paying TOO MUCH tax!

we are expanding, and my drivers love bing in the base and playin a game of pool, having a tea watch the match as a job comes in and we are gettin a contract which means the drivers will have to wait on the other side of town so as it would have me, i like to know about other towns a and drivers.

in brighton both the hacks and ph are all over the place.
none of thios pool in the ofice lark.

We're the same, we took over another company last year and they had a habit of socialising in the office. You would get the base staff pulling their hair out with screens full of work and most of the drivers sat supping tea and chatting
But now they're part of a bigger set up they get stuck in and are seeing the benifits in their takings, most of the time there's very little sitting around parked up somewhere, we seem to run late most of the time with work coming out of our ears!
Our biggest problem is covering account work because it doesnt pay as much as cash jobs nobody wants it, even though you can pick up a couple of hundered quid after your radio monies taken out every week.

I must admit i'll only cover it if i'm "sat on it", i wont be dragged to one.
But some of the accounts are crackers, we have a coach company who can order 30+ cars in one go going all over the country, but this leaves us short covering the bread and butter pre booked work.

theres always the jobs you dont want and theres always the perks, for every idiot theres a nice customer and for every mile theres a pound(plus 20p)

In my city theres not a lot of account work, mostly cash jobs so you dont get the hassle from drivers. I have noticed that a driver dropping at a supermarket will blow in "free at supermarket" hoping for a return job but if he has to pick fom there then my god does he do it with the minumum amount of grace.

I found this forum and read through and its fascinating, i thought it was just our city and our base that had thse problems but it seems its the same everywhere.

I think you will find that no-matter how bad your manor is, there's always somewhere worse.

That's just what I've recently discovered as well - and I expect you are speaking for a great many more drivers and proprietors up and down the country too.

As for discussing actual earnings figures, an open forum is perhaps not a discreet enough place for this at this moment in time. Because although hackney carriage drivers are used to their costs and tariffs being discussed at length in public, the private hire side of the trade has a long tradition of keeping that particular aspect of their job as private as possible. So don't rely toooo much on any of the figures that you see bandied about.

However, since both data dispatch systems and meters came into widespread use in PH companies - coinciding more or less with the turn of the century - this secrecy about takings, earnings and hours is no longer relevant. There are, in fact, no more secrets about PH earnings now, than there are about hackney carriage drivers earnings. It's pretty much an open book.

Traditions die hard though and they must be allowed to evolve at their own pace. Timing is important here and I personally think that six years into this new information era, is a very good time for drivers to begin to seriously re-assess the state of their earnings and hours, if not in public just at the moment, then at least behind the scenes.

As for the forum, I can't get over the fact that a driver, from say Inverness, can be discussing something with a proprietor from Swansea and another driver in Portsmouth, with a potential audience of many tens of thousands - and that it's all happening in real time!

thats a minumum figure £5 an hour....but i suppose yeah its probably the figure you are looking at, any less and you are in the wrong firm.
