Petrol prices drive stretch limo firm to wall

A1 Stretch Limos' fleet of 50 vehicles ranging from 20-passenger Hummers to upmarket Bentleys has served thousands of hen parties, weddings and Saturday-night carousers across London and the South-East since it was founded six years ago.

Its pink stretch Cadillac could often be seen cruising the streets of the West End while its customised fire engine, revamped into a bizarre-looking party bus, was another of its quirkier vehicles.

But the high price of petrol and the downturn in consumer spending hit hard and administrators have been called in to find new owners.

Founders Eddy Ellis and Neil Percival are among several bidders attempting to rescue the company. Venture capitalists and others in the trade have also been making inquiries.

Kevin Brown of administrators Marriott Palmer Brown said: 'I'm very hopeful we'll find someone willing to buy it. We'd be looking at around the £1m mark.'

Turnover last year was £4m.

Maybe they should have tried Toyata Priuses instead of Hummers if fuel prices were such a problem :-|

But if fuel prices were to blame then the business must have been pretty marginal anyway.

Perhaps the novelty of these...err...novelty vehicles is wearing off. :)
