I know I’ve said it before, but this time I really am going. Taxi sold.

I started in 1985, and have loved this profession from the beginning. I think I’m the only person on the planet that would give me a job. I’ve loved the independence of being an owner driver, to be able to come and go as I please. But I got an offer I really couldn’t refuse from a ph driver who is sick of the dark side, so it’s hey ho, off I go. The hackney trade, at least in Lincoln, is on a phenomenal rise, like I’ve never known. The kipper season? January is more like the bloater season. It’s wearing me out, to be honest, so I have decided to go.
To you lot out there who remain in the trade, I hope work is on the up for you too.
Be lucky, as they say.

Jimbo.

Don’t think I will ever retire but very good luck to you.

Amazing how many people kark it soon after retiring, so fingers crossed for you.

As for the trade, the future is good IMO. [-o<

I'm seriously thinking of packing it in whilst I still have my health I have seen too many friends die recently so am thinking about selling up the business and cashing in one house to fund a bucket list whilst I am still able. I don't want to be doing this until my health forces me to pack it in I would like to get the chance to live a little

too many in this trade keep going until their health fails

The question I would ask is why would you not? :-k

The world is a big place full of fabulous places to go to.

When Mrs Sx was in India I spent over five years traveling south Asia and I loved every second of it.

Hopefully she will go back at some time so I can do a lot more.

As I said I'm never going to retire voluntarily, but the older I get, the less I will work, and the more of the world I will see.

But I've got a good 20 years in the trade left. [-o<

I'd be off too if I was a property/business magnate like Edders :-o

But if I cashed in everything I have, would be lucky to have £30k.

Which is a lot more than many have, but not quite enough to retire on. And I'd be left without a car, no job, and in a rented house, so it just ain't gonna happen.

But a major chapter of my life should come to an end pretty soon, so might get on with some unfinished business after that. In fact, that often feels like it's the only thing that keeps me going, so it's more of a case of 'must' rather than 'might'.

In fact, who knows, that could also spell the end of the other major chapter, namely the job :?

But while typing this up, suddenly realised I'd missed my lottery ticket, so this post may have stalled my exit from the trade

More like the sardine season up here :-o

But good luck with whatever you're doing next, Jimbo =D>

And spare a thought for those of us who are cheered up when we get a 20p tip

(Don't know about kippers or sardines in reality, but it's certainly pretty dead up here, except if you fancy waiting up till after 1-2am for a few pished up students.

To be fair, not really sure if it's that different to a normal January [pre-lockdown, at least] but certainly isn't anything spectacular.)

hardly the business even with the vehicles phone numbers and equipment is only worth 35K and I have tenants in one house (10 months into 2 year contract) and about 38K to pay on the mortgage ! The advantage I will have is that house prices round here are buoyant so once I can sell up and move into the other house after the government has grabbed their chunk of CGT because one room is registered as the business premises so have to pay CGT  then I should have enough to live on till pensions available

BUT I might be able to take a 3 month sabbatical and then would need to work for a year or two either driving or I might look at perhaps doing something different
