That's about it in a nutshell - it's quite possible to earn reasonable money as a taxi driver, but not within a reasonable number of hours.

Or to put it another way, it is possible to align your earnings with the national average wage (which is a logical and reasonable benchmark to peg them to) but not within the hours in the national average working week (which is a logical and reasonable benchmark to peg the hours to).

In other words taxi drivers earnings and hours are out of sync and until a conscious and consistent effort is made to re-align them, there is every likelihood that drivers will continue to work gradually longer and longer hours for (possibly) less money.

So do you reckon if you are taxiing 43.6 hours per week (UK's average) you would not meet the national minimum wage ?

You may very well do, but it is very unlikely that you will be achieving the national AVERAGE wage unless you are working at least fifty hours a week, on average. eusasmiles.zip

You may be lucky and be able to earn the national average wage, in some areas, in less hours but they will be few and far between.

It depends on when you do those hours.

If you did them Friday/Sat/Sun night, then IMO you would exceed the min wage by quite a margin.

If you did them Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs daytime, then IMO you wouldn't be that far off the min wage.

The choice is yours.

To an extent I agree, but to that extent anyone working lower than the average wage is out of sync, so unless everyone in the country earns the same (hugely unlikely, even under communism), then there will always be people below the average.

The fact is that trade earnings are low because it's a job that most people can do - that's why my own preference is for stiffer hurdles to entering the trade.

I don't think the question can really be asked in this way, since there are so many different scenarios.

For example, I know there are hired drivers in my manor earning less than the minimum wage, say £160 for 40 hours compared to the minimum wage of around £200 for the same hours (?).

Yet I suspect an owner driver in a big city could make the same profit for a doubler on a Saturday.

From what I've been told, minicab drivers here in London can make around 400 pounds for just doing Friday, Saturdays and Sundays alone. That's sounds like far above the national average to me, or is there something I am missing here (?)

Is it possible to make £600 gross in London on a 56 hours week, working mainly evenings and weekends?

Well, I've basically had it with trying to find out how much you can earn, it seems no-one in the trade will give anything away. Maybe for tax reasons? I dont know. But the money must be good, otherwise they'd tell you straight up? Plus the more taxi drivers around, the less earnings for all ? Best bet is to get out there and see for yourself. Thats what i'm going to do !

I reckon its more a case of its different for everyone mate depends on hours worked , area you work , if its a busy week or not, if your any good at the job, if your at it with one of the girls giving the jobs out  all I can say is that if you put the hours in don't have many breakdowns you will make a what I would call a good living.

The issue isn't so much your take, it's your profit.
