Gunman murders taxi passenger in Oldbury street

Image

A man was shot dead after a taxi was ambushed on an Oldbury street.

Officers were called to Dudley Road East, Tividale, just before 1.30am on Sunday, where the victim was found with serious gunshot wounds.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The street was cordoned off and a forensics tent was put up at the scene which was later opened up to reveal a blue taxi inside from 121 Cars, based in Tipton.

The victim is believed to have been a passenger in the taxi. The driver escaped without injury but suffered severe shock. The firm did not wish to comment but it is understood the driver was helping West Midlands Police with enquiries.

A West Midland Police spokesperson said: "Our investigation is in the early stages and we have closed off the area as forensic examinations are carried out."

A section of Dudley Road East was cordoned off on Sunday morning as forensic investigations got underway.

A blue police tent was located upon the road, on the left hand side of the carriageway, heading in the direction of Oldbury.

Inside the tent could be seen a blue taxi from the firm 121 Cars.

The cordon stretched from between two businesses located on the street, although the tent itself was located further inside, next to some bushes and residential houses.

Residents living near to the scene spoke of their shock, saying crime was not usually an issue in the area.

Jaz Kaur, aged 57, said she heard an ambulance during the early hours, adding: "I thought someone had crashed.

"Yes, of course the incident is shocking. We have never heard anything like this before, we have never seen anything like this.

"You wouldn't expect it along a main road with traffic passing by."

Lynne Austin, 43, said: "I am shocked to hear about this. This does not really happen around here, it is a pretty quiet area.

"I am just wondering what has happened and who it could be."

One man, who wished to remain anonymous, said heard a bang and thought it was a gunshot.

He said: "Jokingly, I said to my wife I heard a gunshot. I was sitting down, watching the TV when I saw the police. I thought there had been a car crash.

"I am shocked to hear about this, very much so. I have lived here for 18 years, I am really surprised. Crime is not an issue around here."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police via live chat at west-midlands.police.uk or call us on 101, quoting crime number 20/1126386/21.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or at crimestoppers-uk.org

Three men deny murdering 18-year-old who was shot in taxi

Kimani Martin was pronounced dead in hospital after he was shot in Dudley Road East, in Tividale, just before 1.30am on June 20.

He had been a passenger in the vehicle when the shooting took place. A provisional cause of death was given at his inquest last month as a shotgun wound to the head.

Kisharne Campbell, 23, and Usman Amjad, 21 – both of no fixed address – and Luke Adams, 19, from Walsall, have all been charged with his murder.

All three appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday morning, where they pleaded not guilty to Mr Martin's murder.

They have been remanded in custody ahead of a provisional trial date on May 9 next year.

Teenager was 'targeted, found and shot dead' in taxi, murder trial hears

Kimani Martin was shot last June in Tividale in revenge for abducting someone earlier in the evening, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Kisharne Campbell, aged 23, and Usman Amjad, 22, both of no fixed address, along with Luke Adams, 20, from Walsall, and Atif Khan, 25, from, Tipton, all deny the charge of murder.

Prosecuting Edward Brown said: "In the early hours of June 20, 2021, the deceased Kimani Martin was travelling in a taxi with two companions. He was in the rear passenger seat, sitting behind the driver.

"In a space of a few minutes, he was targeted, found and shot dead.

"The fact that he was targeted did not come out of the blue. Whilst the reasons for his killing will go back a little in time, it was shortly before 1.30am when the taxi he was in was on Dudley Road East. A car behind it started flashing its lights.

"That car was a stolen blue Golf. Kimani Martin and his two companions in the taxi were clearly worried as to who it was in the car behind as it stalked them. For reasons that will become clear, they knew something of why they were being followed."

He added: "They told the driver to speed up. The taxi driver then heard a loud bang and he slowed down – he thought he had a burst tyre. The Golf then pulled up alongside the taxi, a loaded shotgun was pointed at the occupants of the taxi and it was fired directly into the taxi."

Kimani, from Birmingham, was shot in the head and died as a result of his injuries whilst his two friends ran off to nearby streets to safety.

Mr Edwards added: "The evidence will be that the gun that killed him was fired from less than approximately three metres from Kimani who was sitting behind the driver on the driver’s side.

"It may be that one or more of the two ‘sides’ was abducted and robbed – over quite what, no one directly involved has said, but it was plainly regarded as serious and ultimately resulted in the decision to shoot and kill Kimani Martin in retribution for what had happened that night."

Mr Edwards explained there were witnesses who saw the Golf chasing the taxi, drawing close, a shot was fired and then the Golf circled the taxi hoping to find the other two occupants.

The trial continues.

I don't think I'd ever have wanted it back as a working vehicle if someone had been murdered in it.

I would probably be the same but you never know hopefully his insurers would write it off and he has a new one now IF he can ever pluck up the courage to get back behind the wheel

Taxi murder: Driver relives moment his passenger was blasted with a shotgun in his car

A taxi driver has described the terrifying moment his passenger was blasted with a shotgun and killed right behind him.

Raja Zaman picked up Kimani Martin and two associates on June 20 last year and within minutes was covered in blood fearing for his life.

The driver, through an interpreter, told Birmingham Crown Court he thought a tyre had blown until he saw his rear mirror shot to pieces and Kimani bleeding from the head in the back seat.

He said: "The man with the gun asked me where the other two were, I told them they had ran the opposite way than they had because I thought they had already killed one person and I did not want them to kill anymore.

"I got out the car myself and was standing by the car, I did not want to get shot myself. I had blood on my coat."

A Blue Golf chased down the taxi in Tividale and the front seat passenger even tried to take control of the wheel to escape.

Mr Zaman said: "He grabbed the steering wheel trying to stop me giving way, but I held on tight but the car still moved. Then I heard what I thought was a tyre blow."

Mr Zaman was working for 1-21 Taxis in Tipton on the night of the slaying and was paid cash up front to drive them to Aston, Birmingham.

The court heard that earlier in the evening Kimani had undertaken an abduction of one the gunman's associates.

The second prosecution witness at Birmingham Crown was Jason Brown, who gave evidence behind a screen for his own safety.

Mr Brown heard a gunshot on the evening in question and then looked out of a window to see the VW Golf circling the stricken taxi.

Kisharne Campbell, aged 23, and Usman Amjad, 22, both of no fixed address, along with Luke Adams, 20, from Walsall, and Atif Khan, 25, from Tipton, are charged with murder.

All deny the charges and the trial continues.

Murder trials hear gunshot which killed teenager in taxi after chase

The murder trial of four men who are accused of executing Mr Martin as he fled Tipton in a taxi to Aston entered the CCTV stage of proceedings.

Kisharne Campbell, aged 23, and Usman Amjad, 22, both of no fixed address, along with Luke Adams, 20, from Walsall, and Atif Khan, 25, from Park Lane, Tipton, are all charged with murder.

The court was told homicide detectives from West Midlands Police had painstakingly put together a timeline of events using footage from CCTV cameras, video doorbells and camera.

Detective Constable Gurjinder Singh Malhi produced a 430-page document for jurors to help them understand the various flashpoints of the night. A domestic doorbell caught the moment a man Kimani Martin had abducted was let out of the boot of a Volvo.

At the same time Mr Martin and two friends were trying to escape Tipton to get back to safe territory in Aston, Birmingham.

They hid in bushes, ran down roads including Tudor Road and Jays Avenue, and dipped behind Tipton Sports and Social Club as they waited for a taxi to pick them up.

One of defendant’s phones, which they had stolen, was even used to phone a taxi from One-2-One Cars.

DC Malhi said: “This footage clearly shows Kimani and three associates hiding behind bushes as they saw a car drive down the road. They then used Campbell’s phone to ring a taxi.”

Tragically for 18-year-old Kimani Martin, their escape from the Black Country was thwarted by gangland rivals who chased the taxi which had picked them up through the streets of Tipton and Tividale.

CCTV footage shown to the court clearly depicted a VW Golf speeding after the taxi down several roads, including Dudley Road East.

The pursuing car could be seen swerving side to side and flashing its lights at the taxi, the driver of which yesterday told jurors about the moment his passenger was shot dead.

Near Sunrise Court on Dudley Road East, the VW Golf had caught the taxi up and the fatal shotgun blast was delivered to the side of Kimani’s head.

DC Malii then played a piece of CCTV footage with sound, in which a car horn can be heard then a gunshot.

He asked the jury: “Did you hear that?

“A bang can clearly be heard.”

The footage was replayed several times, and the fatal gunshot reverberated around the courtroom.

The tragic moment’s repeating proved too much for Kimani Martin’s family, one of which broke down in tears and had to be escorted from the courtroom.

The defendants sat impassive in the dock as the gunshot was replayed.

DC Mahli then revealed footage of four men running away from the VW Golf.

He said: “The first silhouette I believe to be Campbell and he can be seen carrying a bag on his back with something protruding from the top, which I believe is the gun.”

All defendants deny the charges against them and the trial continues.

Drug-dealing rapper found guilty of murdering teenager in taxi shooting

Image
Guilty of murder: Kisharne "Kash" Campbell

A drug-dealing Tipton rapper has been found guilty of murdering a teenager who was shot in a taxi in Tividale.

The jury rejected Kisharne "Kash" Campbell's claim he had only meant to shoot a warning shot at the taxi carrying Kimani Martin on June 20 last year, and convicted him of murder.

After deliberating for 25 hours and five minutes about the guilt of those in the car from which the fatal shot was fired, they also found Atif Khan guilty of murder and Usman Amjad guilty of manslaughter. Another defendent, Luke Adams, was cleared of murder.

The four-week trial shone a light on the murky world of drug dealing and "drill music", and how they combine to create a lethal cocktail of bravado, violence and gang disputes.

Campbell released music on Spotify, Apple Music and Soundcloud under the name Kash, boasting about his drug-dealing empire and violence meted out to rivals.

He filmed videos in Tipton riding around in a Rolls Royce bragging about how much crack and heroin he sold, how he would cut the drugs to make more money and his readiness to use a gun if needed.

Campbell was invited to record a song and video for urban media platform P110 which helped Jaykae, Skepta, Mist, Giggs and Bugzy Malone on the path to mainstream stardom.

In the video for P110's Hood's Hottest 2, the 23-year-old can be seen getting out of a Rolls Royce wearing his distinctive "Kash" gold and diamond necklace.

Filmed at Dudley Port hand car wash and valet, the video featured a luxury BMW, Mercedes and expensive quad bikes. Surrounded by masked men drinking brandy Kash immediately boasts about his burgeoning drug empire.

His opening line being: "I put the food on the scales and tell my young boy to wrap it up" and also raps about "mountains of snow (cocaine) and "reloading half a b (kilo)".

Mimicking shooting a gun Campbell warns he happily will enter drug rivals' "trap houses" and " still kidnaps and do acid attacks".

The trial at Birmingham Crown Court heard how Aston teenager Kimani Martin befriended Campbell at a music studio. Then, after arranging to meet Campbell for a drug deal, he kidnapped him and Luke Adams at gunpoint, forcing them to hand over money and a mobile phone with a "drugs hotline" as its number.

Mr Martin and his two associates also stole Campbell's "Kash" necklace.

An associate of Kimani Martin, who did not want to be named, told the Express & Star: "Kimani loved having a laugh and he would have been showing off the necklace on Snapchat as soon as he could.

"He was only 18. No-one deserved to be murdered. What happened to him has made a lot of us grow up and look at our lives."

The necklace was found in the back of the taxi in which Kimani was shot dead, and provided detectives with their first major lead in the investigation.

Detective Inspector Jim Colclough, from West Midlands Police Homicide Squad, said: "With the necklace in the back of the taxi was Campbell's mobile phone, so we rang his mother and spoke to her to find out his whereabouts.

"We quickly realised Campbell was central to our investigation. It did not take long to identify the other three but we had to be patient with Khan who fled to Pakistan after the murder and we had to wait until he returned to the UK to arrest him."

He added: "We never did track down the two people with Kimani in that taxi. However, they are lucky to be alive because we believe those in the car acted together.

"We know after the first shot, the Golf circled around and the driver asked the taxi driver where the other two were. We could easily have been dealing with a triple murder."

He added: "We charged all four with murder under join enterprise because they would have knew Campbell wanted revenge. Whilst in the Golf several calls were made to 1-2-1 Cars to try and locate the taxi which had picked Martin up. We don't believe they were given any information but they tragically spotted the taxi leaving Tipton and gave chase.

"They knew he had a gun, this was not a revolver hidden in his pocket which he pulled out seconds before the shooting. He had a shotgun which have long barrels, they would have all seen him and were encouraging him to use it"

In a chilling boast which foreshadowed future events, Kash raps "He always keeps a strap (gun) close to him".

During the trial the jury heard that within an hour of being freed by his captors Campbell had a loaded shotgun in his hands and was ready to kill.

Campbell being taken off the streets gave particular satisfaction to detectives in the West Midlands Police, whom the rapper regularly goaded in his music and videos.

Smiling at the camera he taunts: "Drugs squad from my teens still trying to raid me.

"Drugs squad trying to find out where ****** at, I'm up at Harvey Nicks about to spend two wraps (£2,000)."

DI Colclough said: "Clearly you can see Campbell was a danger to society. He no regard for the law and a total disregard for human life. If crossed he was willing to exact fatal revenge."

The homicide squad, which is now comprised of detectives and civilians, built watertight case against Campbell.

One civilian who worked on the case is a former detective who left the force after serving 30 years but has returned to offer his expertise in a civilian capacity. The 70-year-old cut his teeth in the force before DNA, mobile phones and motion sensor cameras were even invented but his people skills and insight makes him a valuable asset to the team. .

Trawling through CCTV footage, which had to be recovered from homes and businesses across Tipton, Dudley Port and Tividale, they created a visual timeline comprised of hundreds of pictures and video clips of showing Campbell from when he was let go by Martin, releasing Adams from a car boot all the way through to fleeing from the Golf carrying the shotgun in a rucksack.

Officers even managed to find a camera which captured the fatal gunshot

The 23-year-old lied for 11 months about his role in the shooting by continually claiming there was a fifth person in the car who shot Kimani.

However, in a remarkable turn of events during cross-examination by Khan's lawyer Campbell admitted being the shooter after fellow defendants refused to back up his lies.

The cocky bravado of his persona as a rapping drug kingpin living the fast life crumbled in the dock as he began crying when confronted with the tragic consequences of his actions.

Campbell's admission even surprised his legal team, his defence barrister Stan Reiz QC told the jury he had been misled, and then entered a plea of manslaughter which prosecutors rejected immediately.

The jury made short work of Campbell's guilt as a murderer but then had to decide whether the other occupants of the VW Golf were an execution squad or confused young men in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Adams, 19, from Walsall, who had been kidnapped, told the jury he had no idea Campbell would murder Martin and was discharged from custody.

Campbell, and Usman Amjad, 22, both of no fixed address, and Atif Khan, 25, from Park Lane, Tipton, will be sentenced on Wednesday, June 29.

Three men jailed for fatal taxi shooting

THREE men have been jailed after an 18-year-old was fatally shot in Tividale last year.

Kisharne Campbell, 24, of Vicarage Close, Tipton and Atif Khan, 25, of Park Lane, Tipton were sentenced on June 29 at Birmingham Crown Court to life imprisonment with minimum terms of 30 years and 27 years respectively for the murder of Kimani Martin.

A third man Usman Amjad, 22, of Wood Green Road, Wednesbury was sentenced to 18 years for manslaughter.

Kimani Martin was killed on June 20 last year in what appeared to be a revenge attack when the men pursued him in a stolen car and fired a single shot into the rear window of the taxi he was travelling in.

The defendants then fled the area and abandoned the vehicle which was later found burnt out.

Lorraine Anson of the Crown Prosecution Service said: "The defendants specifically targeted Kimani Martin and purposefully hunted him down.

“They were determined to take his life in retaliation for an earlier incident in which it is alleged Mr Martin had been involved in a robbery and kidnapping, and they did so with devastating results when they fired a single shot into the taxi.

"I hope today's sentences serve as a deterrent to those who might consider following in these despicable footsteps.

“We will robustly prosecute those committing these offences including, where the law allows, those offenders not actually firing the fatal shots but who encourage or assist in the act.

"I want to thank all those who were involved in investigating and prosecuting this ruthless and wholly appalling crime.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Martin in what has no doubt been a truly devastating time for them.”
