Lancashire police calm worried parents after report of Fleetwood taxi luring boy to get in

Lancashire Constabulary has spoken out after St Wulstan's and St Edmund's Catholic Primary School told parents to be vigilant

Lancashire Constabulary has moved to calm worried parents after reports surfaced of a taxi reportedly luring a boy towards it.

The incident was reported to police on Tuesday (May 24) in the Fleetwood area of the Fylde coast.

Police said that a boy reported being approached by a man in a white taxi who, he said, asked the youngster to get in. This was close to West View Health Village in Broadway before 4pm.

Nearby St Wulstan's and St Edmund's Catholic Primary School stated that the boy did not approach the vehicle and instead moved to what he believed to be a safe location.

A warning was issued by the school for parents to be extra vigilant about their children's whereabouts.

But a new statement from the police force today (May 26) has solved the incident regarding the apparent 'luring' of the boy.

A spokesperson for the police said the taxi driver was in fact issuing the boy a hand signal to say he was about to park his car near him. They were comfortable that no offence took place.

The full, new statement issued by Fleetwood Area Police today said: "Earlier this week we became aware of a report a man in a taxi had asked a child to get into his vehicle in Fleetwood. Following further investigation and a review of CCTV, we have spoken to the driver and are satisfied this was a misunderstanding.

"The driver had made a hand signal to the child as he was about to park his car. No offence took place.

"The initial report was made in good faith and we would like to reassure parents regarding any concerns they may have. We take all reports seriously and would continue to encourage people to come forward should they be concerned."
