Suspect accused of sexually assaulting woman in private hire taxi named

A man has been charged with sexual assault after a woman reported being attacked in a private hire taxi.

Lucel Tugui, 33, will appear in court today after a woman reported she was sexually assaulted. Tugui, of Maureen Walk, Fazakerley, will appear in Wirral adult remand court, charged with two counts of sexual assault.

The charge comes after a woman, in her 20s, reported that she had been assaulted while in a private hire taxi in the Knowsley area. She said the incident happened in the early hours of Monday, August 1.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Parry said: "Merseyside Police takes every report of sexual offences extremely seriously and has dedicated officers within the force’s Unity Team who are specially trained to both thoroughly investigate allegations of serious sexual assaults and make sure that those reporting them are properly supported.

"I would like to take this opportunity to reassure anyone who has suffered a sexual offence that if you can find the courage to come forward and speak to us, we will deal with you sensitively and make sure that reports are properly and thoroughly investigated.

"Anyone who has been the victim of a sexual offence can call officers in the force’s Unity Team on 0151 777 1382 or 101. Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers, anonymously and free, on 0800 555 111.

"Support for victims is also available through the registered charity the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre Cheshire and Merseyside, who can be contacted on 01925 221 546 or 0330 363 0063 or Rape and Sexual Assault Merseyside (RASA) on 0151 558 1801."

Saw that article earlier, but didn't bother with it because I was assuming it was a passenger on passenger assault.

But I did entertain the possibility that it was a male driver who assaulted a female passenger, but it didn't specifically state the male was the driver (normally it's stated if it's the driver, but think one or two previous articles haven't specifically said it's the driver until trial).

But I didn't even consider that the victim here might be the driver. Possible, but my money is still on the driver having nothing to do with it

And, of course, statistically very few female PHDs in the early hours of the morning, particularly in their 20s

The Merseyside Police news release isn't much help either, and the Echo's article is just a rehash.

But I'd guess that if the driver was involved, either as victim or perpetrator, then they would have stated so:

I’m with you, the Echo isn’t the best paper and doesn’t necessarily portray the taxi/private hire trade in a good light very often.
