I was listening to local radio a couple of weeks ago and there was an item about Hereford County Council's licensing department investigating a mother for running an illegal private hire / taxi business because she was picking up her children and their friends from a leisure centre on a regular basis.

I wonder how many children are going to be left on the side of the road to walk home in the dark while the Council waits for crb checks on them

If she was doing it for some kind of payment, then that could come under licensing proceedure.

But councils can't keep tabs on what licensed vehicles do, so the chances of them even attempting to sort that out are slim at best. :?

I was having a chat to one of the other hc drivers about this tonight.

It seems they did not bother asking her any questions about what she was doing, they just sent her a letter threatening her with court action if she carried on picking her children up.

That's even more of a concern, making accusations without checking the facts first - but what else do you expect of Hereford's licensing department eusasmiles.zip

I would have thought they would have written to her pointing out the legislation. TBH I think the council are doing the right thing. I wish more councils would like-wise.

If the woman is doing nothing wrong, then what's the problem. I keep on winning the Nigerian lottery, but I never get upset when the cheque doesn't arrive.

I must say it is refreshing to hear of such a pro-active licensing dept

One of the very few
