Most interesting thing here is the age difference between the two alleged perps, assuming they were both acting in the same group.

But their MO suggests they're both thick as mince - same street, and the second robbery looks like it was of a delivery driver called to someone's home address #-o

Taxi and takeaway delivery drivers targeted by robbers in Thurnscoe

A TAXI driver and a takeaway delivery driver were targeted by robbers armed with a knife in two separate incidents in Thurnscoe.

Two men, including a teenager, have been remanded in custody having denied two incidents of robbery in Thurnscoe earlier this week.

Tyson Wardle, (32), of Church Street, Barnsley, and a 15-year-old boy also from the town who cannot be named for legal reasons, each denied two charges of robbery yesterday (Thursday, February 24) at Barnsley Magistrates Court, relating to incidents that took place on Sunday, February 20 and Monday, February 21.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “The first took place at about 9.15pm on Sunday night on Church Street in Thurnscoe.

“A taxi was ordered to an address on Church Street. After it arrived, the car was approached by three males, and it is claimed one of them held a knife to the throat of the driver and demanded he hand over the keys and leave the vehicle behind.

“The victim began to walk away, and it is alleged the vehicle drove up alongside him and the driver made threats to kill him before driving off.

“The second incident also took place on Church Street at about 8.30pm on Monday. This time, a takeaway delivery driver was delivering to a property on that street when the door was answered by a group of men, one of whom was carrying a knife.

“The group surrounded him, with one of them demanding his car key. The victim ran back to the car and entered it but he was followed into the car by two of the group. He was struck behind his right ear and pulled from the vehicle, ending up on the floor.

“The car was driven off and recovered at about 10.05pm in Mount Avenue in Great Houghton.

“Wardle and the 15-year-old have both been remanded in custody to face trial at a later date.”

Sheffield Crown Court: Robbers caged after taxi driver had cab taken at knifepoint

Two men and a teenage boy have been locked up after a taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint sparking a police pursuit as his cab was driven away at speed.

Sheffield Crown Court heard on October 26 how Chad Hiles, aged 21, Tyson Wardle, aged 32, and a teenager – who was aged 15 at the time – summoned the taxi-driver before Hiles held a knife to the cabbie’s throat and then fled in his vehicle in Thurnscoe, Barnsley.

Judge Rachael Harrison said Hiles and Wardle acted together and she told Hiles: “You were clearly looking for a vulnerable person whose lawful life required them to be out at that time.” She added: "You were both wearing face coverings. You Hiles had a knife and held it to the victim’s throat and turned the car keys and then drove away in the stolen car.”

Judge Harrison said Hiles drove at excessive speeds on the wrong side of the road after he failed to stop for police who deployed a ‘tactical halt’ to stop the vehicle and officers found Hiles had a lock-knife and a ski-mask. She added Hiles had targeted the taxi-driver at night on a street when he was particularly vulnerable and the defendant had played a leading role because he had the knife.

Judge Harrison said: “As you had the knife you were playing a leading role. You then drove his vehicle away driving dangerously and without a licence and insurance.”

Hiles, of Chapel Lane, in Thurnscoe, Barnsley, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to robbery, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and a licence, and possessing a bladed article after the incident on February 20. He also admitted a theft from September 25, 2021, after he had targeted a vulnerable man in the street and taken his television.

Wardle, of Church Street, in Greasbrough, Rotherham, who has previous convictions including offences of violence, dishonesty and possessing offensive weapons, pleaded guilty to the robbery of the taxi driver. The teenager, of Barnsley, now aged 16 and who cannot be named for legal reasons, also pleaded guilty to the robbery of the taxi-driver.

Wardle and the teenager were also involved in the robbery of a delivery driver who was confronted and chased on February 21, according to the court. The teenager and Wardle, who was on custodial licence for a previous offence, both pleaded guilty to the robbery of the delivery driver.

Judge Harrison told Wardle: “This catalogue of offending – including being on licence when not engaging with supervision – shows a willingness to return to criminal behaviour whenever the opportunity presents.”

She told the teenager: “You accept you were a willing person in the robberies and you wanted some money. You agreed there was some planning, arranging for victims to come to the address.” Judge Harrison added: “Your family tried to care for you but at the time of these offences you appeared to have been out of control.”

She sentenced Hiles to 62-and-a-half months of custody. Wardle was sentenced to 81 months of custody extended to 117 months and he must serve two-thirds of the original 81-month term before he can be released, and he will remain on licence until the end of the extended term. The teenager was sentenced to two years and three months of detention.

Not often you see sentences in terms of months expressed at such high numbers? Is there a limit?

Funny thing, too - the teenager was given 'two years and three months' of detention. Why not 27 months? :-s

Those sorts of sentences are usually in months, to take into account the discount given for guilty pleas.

Or the breakdown is in months, with maybe the final total in years.

Gotcha, and I've always been aware of how they expressed some sentences in terms of months, but wasn't quite sure why. But can't recall figures of anything like this magnitude, and can't find anything like it with an internet search.

I mean, 117 months? :-o

But, as Edders says, at least it keeps the, er, arithmetically-challenged perps guessing

Although I suspect it's more to do with the counting abilities of those on the bench   8-[
