A bit of common sense on the foum at last - well done. You have summed up the problem perfectly - its called supply and demand. The black cabs dont want to know when it comes to the pubs and clubs and the PH are left to clean up. Touts see it as an opporunity to make money without paying operators a fee.

I don't want to know when it comes to pubs and clubs? :-s

So where do you think my customers come from this coming weekend after Midnight then? Thin air?

No I'm not on the Radio to whoever asked. if i was and accepted a job, then I would go to the destination whatever it was.

You may think my view point comes from my Ivory tower outside the smoke, but my father who has been a greenbadgeholder for some 43 years (indeed a further 13 of my family also are) dont all share your views.

There is a valid arguement that the Minicab's do the work that none of you (black cabs) wish to do, ie clubs pubs ect. I have no clue if your a radio cab or not, but I bet all the tea in China you have NEVER entered a pub to collect a customer.

As my father so eloquently puts it. "Imagine all the crap that would want to get into my cab if minicabs werent clearing the crap off the streets"

Thanks for the information Jiffy, but i'm not sure what, or how it justifies the main perpretators of Illegal pick ups are now licensed Minicabs opposed to 'pirate' cabs, which was the basis of my post above. :?

As for your fathers quote, there are some parts of London I wholeheartedly agree with him, there are others though such as the Addison Lee / Premier markets that he would do better to think how we get them back in Taxis opposed to Minicabs? :x

Lets hope all these taxi drivers that form your close family work past Midnight as well as me.

I think that's one of the biggest differences between the two sides of the trade. Your side sits back and expects everything to come your way, whereas my side goes to the punter.

Called 'customer service' methinks.

I'm not sure I ever read on TDO a justification for illegal pick-ups. :-k

What I would like to see is the right customer getting into the right licensed vehicle, and IMO PH signage would help no-end. :D

spot on sussex this is so so true the so called "real Taxi service" think that the passanger should always use them i think its fair to say that most of them cant handle the competition but the sad thing is they are the best advert for PH the way that some act towards passangers (not all do i may add) as you say now a days the name of the game is "customer service" and if you think about it if you receive bad service you just dont go back.

We've been handling the 'competition' as you put it since 1962.

And still, even in February i'm run of my feet, so luckily for me the London public still cherish the proper Taxi above the Minicab, and not the non english speaking alternatives.

Hence in that side of the trade you have to work long hours, 7 days a week, to make ends meet.

Speaks volumes I think.

Luckily in London, in your above quote, I can exchange the word PH for TAXI.

Best they start using these nice Company signs they are all allowed to use then?

Stops the customer getting the wrong vehicle.

Stops the driver taking the wrong customer as well.

Handy things really.

No, your side of the trade HAS to go to the customer, because thats what PH do.

Radio circuit Taxis can also do that, but as I drive around London, available, am I not 'going' to the customer as well?

Or is that in one ear and out the other?

Indeed. You would have to speak a few languages to contact base.

Talking about Taxis that come to you, and Minicabs with signs, heres an article for you, from the learned one.

I agree, a similar disc system worked well in Edinburgh for years before it was changed to plates for some unknown reason

the reason that the cars in edinburgh were plated was so that we can get acsess to the greenway and would help the police separate normal joe publics car from a PH. right now if you get caught in the greenways it a £40 fine i think??
not been caught yet so not to sure

Do the licensed limos in Edinburgh have exterior plates or were they allowed to keep the interior ones ?

I think at the airports most do.

But if a sign is allowed in the drivers hand, then it's pretty stupid not to allow it on the driver's motor. :-k
