Uber customer 'is charged $29,000 for $54 ride while on holiday in Costa Rica after currency conversion mix up'

An Uber customer has claimed that she was charged $29,000 for a $54 ride while on holiday in Costa Rica, following a currency conversion mix up.

Dominique, believed to be from the US, had documented the unfortunate experience she encountered via TikTok.

Under the handle @dominique.xo.xo, she showed a screenshot of her bank account, which includes an outgoing transaction of $29,994.33.

Commenting on the incident in a follow-up to her first video on the matter, Dominique said: 'I was going back and forth with the bank and they basically told me it was my fault because I put a travel notice on my card.

'And because of that, the charge was able to bypass all security measures [and] policies that were in place with the bank.'

She also said she 'reached out to Uber as well', but Dominique claimed the private taxi service service refused to take responsibility for the issue.

The TikTok user continued: 'I reached out to [Uber's] customer support. All that I was able to get from them is that it was my bank's fault and that I needed to check with my bank on why did not charge me in the correct currency.'

Dominique appears to have been left in a state of limbo, not knowing which way to turn as she fumed that her 'bank and Uber were basically blaming each other'.

She also said that she ordered the trip via her main bank account, which left her unable to withdraw any money, which forced her to put her holiday 'on hold'.

The TikTok user finished the video by sharing that Uber responded to her claim on Twiitter, saying they would 'call her immediately'.

Uber has been contacted by MailOnline for comment.
