Bogus Uber driver found guilty of attempted rape and kidnap

Image

A man claimed to be an Uber driver when he picked up two women in Brighton on separate occasions and then sexually assaulted them.

Graham Head, 66, denied kidnap and trying to rape one of the women and attacking the other in August and November last year.

He dragged one woman from his car into Hove Park during a terrifying sex attack last summer as she tried to fight him off. She reached a friend on her phone and said that she was being raped.

Head was also convicted of assaulting the other women on the back seat of his car before she kicked him “really hard in the crotch” and fled.

Head said that the first woman never got into his car and, while he accepted giving the second woman a lift, he said that he never touched her.

A jury of four men and eight women at Hove Crown Court unanimously found him guilty of kidnap, attempted rape and sexual assault after a trial that started on Tuesday 16 May.

José Olivares-Chandler, prosecuting, told the court that Head, who sometimes called himself Gary, was a predatory sober man who targeted vulnerable younger women who were by themselves after they had been drinking.

Mr Olivares-Chandler said that Head wore a covid mask and dark latex gloves and had Viagra and condoms on him when he was caught – as well as “N-Uber” business cards.

When police searched Head’s home, in Coast Road, Pevensey Bay, they found an incapacitating spray and an extendable baton.

The jury heard evidence that the personalised number plate on Head’s grey Mercedes car was filmed by a number of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and other security cameras.

And mobile phone mast data located both women, whose identities are protected by law, in the same area as Head’s car.

Mr Olivares-Chandler told the court that Head had put his phone in flight or airplane mode to try to avoid detection.

Head had also targeted other women who were the worse for wear, the prosecutor said, and “through beer goggles he may seem like a good Samaritan”.

But, he said, “viewed in the cold sober light of day he may appear less than charitable”.

The jury was sent out yesterday afternoon (Thursday 1 June) and returned its unanimous verdicts just before 1pm today.

Head was remanded in custody, shouting that he was innocent, to allow for an assessment of dangerousness. He is due to be sentenced on Monday 24 July.

Detective Constable Elliott Lander, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: “Graham Head is a predatory offender who gained the trust of these victims by posing as a taxi driver, only to take advantage of vulnerable women in the most abhorrent ways.

“The items found in his car show the callous, pre-meditated nature of his crimes as he moved through Brighton and Hove looking for potential victims.

“Thanks to the quick-thinking and bravery of these two women, we were quickly able to connect Head to both incidents and bring him to justice. I would like to thank them both for their support during this investigation.

“Without them, this dangerous individual could still be at large. Instead, he has been brought to justice and the streets of Brighton and Hove are safer as a result.

“We believe Head may have further victims who have not yet come forward. If you believe you may have been a victim, or have any information which could help, please contact police online or via 101, quoting Operation Cooper. Always dial 999 in an emergency.”

Interesting that the Sussex Police press release doesn't mention the U-word, and just uses the t-word (and looks like the Argus has simply rehashed that).

There's an official police video here - not particularly interesting, but it does show actual footage of the perp being arrested :-o

Ridiculous music for a video like that, though :?

I was going to mention the Uber aspect, but as one article said he told one of his victims he was a Uber it's more understandable.

The point I was going to make was that it was interesting an unlicensed taxi/PH was now being viewed as an unlicensed Uber.

A bogus taxi driver who prowled the streets looking for women to rape on their way home from nights out may have attacked other victims, investigators have said.

Police are appealing for women who think they may have been approached or attacked by Graham Head to come forward.

Head, 66, who kidnapped and tried to rape two women, was caught after one victim remembered three digits of his car registration.

He had armed himself with a balaclava, latex gloves, condoms and Viagra pills and posed as a cab driver, scouring the streets of Brighton in search of victims.

there's more but mostly rehash

It's all rehash, Edders. That line seems to be included in all the sources (maybe seven or eight now), including in the final paragraph of the article at the top of this thread.

Although the Yahoo source seems to be the only one that's majored with that angle in terms of the headline.

Can't be bothered reading through them all, but they seem to mostly rehash the Sussex Police news release, but did notice these two lines in the Argus version:

The Argus wrote:
After the jury found him Head raged at the verdicts shouting: “I’m not guilty of anything.”

As Judge Jeremy Gold KC told Head he will be sentenced next month, the fake cabbie yelled: “No. No DNA, no nothing.”

Don't know if it is, really. I mean, if he said he was a Streamline driver and was handing out cards with Streamline on them, then the press could legitimately use a 'fake Streamline driver' angle, although it might not have the same resonance with readers, particularly those who don't know the local market. But the perp had “N-Uber” business cards, and everyone's heard of Uber :-o

But the point is maybe that normally fake drivers aren't purporting to represent any particular operation - they're just fake 'taxi' drivers.

Which indeed seems to be the angle that all the sources have gone for apart from the Brighton and Hove News article at the top of the thread, which I'd guess had someone actually attending the trial. The rest, I suspect, have just rehashed the Sussex Police stuff, hence a fake 'taxi driver'.

Man who posed as Uber driver to sexually assault Brighton women jailed

https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/2367538 ... en-jailed/

A “sexual predator” who kept Viagra and a balaclava in his car and pretended to be a taxi driver to carry out “terrifying” sexual assaults on vulnerable young women has been jailed.

Graham Head, 66, kidnapped and sexually assaulted a woman in his silver Mercedes and attempted to rape another woman in a park bush after she received a lift from him.

Head was caught in the early hours of November 18, 2022, after one of his victims escaped and partially identified the registration plate of the car.

Following a trial at Hove Crown Court in May he was found guilty of kidnap, attempted rape and assault by penetration.

At a sentencing hearing at Hove Crown Court today, prosecutor Ryan Richter described the case as “a series of terrifying night-time sexual assaults on two vulnerable women”.

In a statement read to court by the prosecution, one of Head’s victims wrote: “I don’t feel safe any more knowing there are people out there who want to do what has been done to me.

“I really struggle to be outside by myself at night.”

The court heard from Francesca Levett, defending, that Head “continues to deny” the offences.

Delivering his sentence, Judge Jeremy Gold KC told Head: “You were in the habit of driving around in the early hours of the morning, posing as a good Samaritan with the intention to give them a lift home.”

He called Head a “sexual predator” who sought women “unlikely to give a coherent account if they even realised what you had done”.

Judge Gold commended one of Head’s victims, adding: “Were it not for her determination he would simply not have been apprehended and we would not be where we are today.”

CCTV footage showed Head driving along streets of Brighton before pulling over near Hove Park, where the first assault took place in August 2022.

Police dashcam footage showed Head driving away from officers chasing him around the Seven Dials area before he was eventually arrested near Preston Circus.

Head, of Coast Road, Pevensey Bay, was sentenced to a 23-year extended sentence consisting of 18 years in prison. He will serve a minimum of 12 years before he is eligible for parole.

Well done to the police, the jury, and the judge.

But blimey they were lucky to catch him, almost red-handed.

I have it on good authority that he is not enjoying his current place of residence.
