An arrest for "arson to endanger life" has been made after a taxi was set alight in Stockton.

The grey-coloured cab was parked on a driveway in Yarm Road, opposite Spring Street, on the evening of Tuesday, August 13, when it was targeted at about 11.15pm. Flames took hold of the vehicle and 999 services were called.

Cleveland Fire Brigade attended, along with Cleveland Police, who taped off the area around the vehicle. Residents say police stayed at the scene throughout the night. Officers have arrested a man who is being quizzed by detectives.

One neighbour told Teesside Live: "I just seen big orange glow in my window - looked out and a car was on fire."

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: "At 11.15pm on Tuesday, August 13, police were called to reports of a car well alight on Yarm Road in Stockton. A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and is currently in police custody. Anyone with information is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101 quoting reference number 155842."

A fire brigade spokesperson added: “Cleveland Fire Brigade were called on 13/08/24 at 11:15pm to an incident on Yarm Road, Eaglescliffe. Two fire engines were in attendance from Thornaby and Yarm. This was a car fire with 50 per cent fire damage to the vehicle. We left the scene at 11:37pm.”
