Police have confirmed they are treating a taxi fire as "wilful" after a black cab was torched in Glasgow.

Emergency services were called to Stronend Street in Possilpark after the alarm was raised at around 2.35pm on Thursday, January 15. Dramatic photos taken from the scene showed flames erupting from the vehicle.

Smoke could be seen billowing out the windows in a plume which dwarfed surrounding buildings. The taxi, which appeared to be parked at the side of the road, had scorch marks visible on the doors and roof.

The vehicle's windows had also been blown out or melted under the heat of flames.

Officers from Police Scotland have now confirmed they believe the fire was started deliberately. Their enquiries remain ongoing.

No injures have been reported as a result of the fire.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Around 2.35pm on Thursday, 15 January, 2026, we received a report of vehicle fire at Stronend Street, Possilpark.

"There were no reported injuries. The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing."

Couple of photos on the Scottish Sun's site :-o

(Also link to the other photo of the actual blaze on the Daily Record's site.)

The Scottish Sun has a big spiel about the 'underworld' stuff around the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas, but also stating that it's not linked to that, although police treating it as 'wilful' :-|

Incidentally, I don't think there's a specific crime of arson in Scotland [-(

I asked Google, and this is what it said:

No, arson is not a specific statutory crime under Scots criminal law. Instead, conduct that would be described as arson in England and Wales is prosecuted in Scotland using the common law offences of wilful fire-raising and culpable and reckless fire-raising.

Key Differences in Terminology

The terminology and legal basis for fire-related offences differ between the two jurisdictions:

Scotland has a distinct common law system. Fire-related crimes are categorised based on the accused's intent:

Wilful fire-raising applies to deliberately starting fires with the intent to cause damage to property.

Culpable and reckless fire-raising is used when a fire is started through reckless behaviour, without a deliberate intent to cause the full extent of the damage.

Another potential charge is fire-raising with intent to defraud insurers if the motive is fraudulent.

England and Wales abolished the common law offence of arson with the Criminal Damage Act 1971. Under this Act, an offence committed by destroying or damaging property by fire must be charged as "arson". The English offence covers both intentional and reckless starting of fires

Unusual time of day, although nothing would surprise me about Possilpark.

Cab's an LPG-conversion.
