A Suffolk taxi driver who attacked a man he suspected was having a relationship with his ex-partner has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Aiden Currey arranged to meet the victim outside the Tesco store in Duke Street, Ipswich, and in what was described as a "revenge" attack, punched him three times in the face, causing him to go to the ground.

The victim suffered a broken nose, one of his teeth was knocked out, and another was damaged, and he also had a cut to his lip which needed six stitches.

Currey, 34, of Adams Lane, Walberswick, admitted unlawful wounding and was given a 14-month prison sentence suspended for two years, a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement, 60 hours of unpaid work, and a four-month curfew.

He was also ordered to pay £1,265 in compensation to the victim and was banned from contacting him for five years.

Sentencing Currey, Recorder Claire Davies KC said he’d been "set on revenge."

Stephen Mather for Currey, who has no previous convictions, said the offence dated back to October 2020 and his client had had the matter hanging over him since then.

I'd have no problem with the headline even if he'd recently lost his badge because of the incident.

But if he lost it back then then surely the headline shouldn't give the impression that he's been a licensed driver in recent history.

Or maybe the council gave him the benefit of the doubt until the criminal case, and to that extent the headline maybe isn't so inaccurate.

But, in turn, that would raise questions regarding why he should be suspended or revoked now, because he'll have been working as a driver for six years, presumably without incident? So what would be the point of taking his badge now?

But, I mean, maybe there's something missing from the piece, or an error, or whatever - could something like this really take six years to come to court?

I despair at the length of some Crown Court delays.

It's a fair point, but there's no way a person given the kind of sentence he has can keep his license.

I wonder if he told the council about these proceedings, which, if so, would make the council's job a lot easier.
