"Drivers need to know where they stand": Bedford MP demands answers from mayor over taxi licence delayshttps://www.bedfordtoday.co.uk/news/peo ... ys-9287659It looks like there’s been a lag in taxi and private hire licence renewals and Mohammad Yasin is asking the mayor why.Yesterday (Tuesday) the Bedford & Kempston MP wrote to Tom Wootton – insisting on a “substantive response" – saying the issue is having real impact on drivers’ livelihoods and businesses.
Mr Yasin said: “These delays are causing uncertainty and financial difficulties for drivers who rely on their licences to work, while taxi companies have raised concerns about the impact on their ability to operate effectively.”
He went on to say: “I would be grateful if you could explain why these delays are occurring, how long applications are currently taking to process, and whether there is a backlog of applications waiting to be dealt with.”
He asked the Bedford mayor if the delay was down to staff changes within the licensing team – and whether budget decisions had affected the service.
“I recognise the need for appropriate checks to ensure licences are issued safely and in line with the relevant requirements. However, drivers need to know where they stand, particularly when delays affect their ability to earn a living.
"I would appreciate a clear update on what has caused the problem and how the council intends to resolve it,” he wrote before reiterating he wanted a “substantive response”.
We have approached the council and the mayor for comment.
