Emissions strategy for London taxis

In order to assist cab owners comply with the emissions strategy, the PCO will be announcing which systems have been approved upon their completion of independent field trials and testing to Euro 3 level.

ECS TaxiCat SYSTEM

The Public Carriage Office has now approved the ECS TaxiCat SYSTEM, an emissions reduction solution in support of the Mayor’s Taxi Emission Strategy.

The ECS TaxiCat SYSTEM has a full stainless steel exhaust combined with an oxidation catalyst and a simple exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) device. The system does not have any electronics, requires no additives and does not have any moving parts. The system can currently be installed onto the following models of taxis which then become Euro 3 compliant.

• Pre-Euro LTI FX4
• Euro 1 LTI Fairway and Fairway Driver
• Euro 1 LTI TX1

System cost is expected to be less than £2,500 (fully inclusive) and further details about fitting etc can be obtained from;-

This system has been independently tested by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) and has undergone 6 months of ‘in-service’ durability testing on a number of licensed London taxis operated by prominent London fleet proprietors.

The following system, along with other solutions, can be viewed at the PCO Technology Fair on 25th, 26th, and 27th March to be held between 10am and 4pm each day in the PCO vehicle inspection area.

The cost's involved are a lot especially if its being fitted to Taxi's which are 8 years or older, but my main gripe is as to what guarantee's will be made that all these wonderful Euro 3 systems will continue to work after the companys that have manufactured them have gone bust, and what recourse will be available.

Another badly thought out left wing policy, with the only choice available being an unreliable TX2 purchase.

For any other London drivers reading this, I'm just of the phone after chatting to Chris at Camberfields.

He's being running 5 on test for the last year and seems impressed with the performance and lack of maintenance associated with the above.

Its £2000 (inc. vat) fitted.

He's fitting out his fleet of 50 with them.

He'll be at the emissions fair at the PCO.

As for all those smokey old sheds that go by the name of London taxis, I say ban don't license.

Well after spending two hours at the PCO emissions fair the other week, the first thing that struck me was the complete apathy shown by up to 15'000 potential 'victims' of this policy which starts on July 1st.

The place was virtualy (like the Mann and Overton stall) empty, I thought the Monday would be like a scrum, but no, about 50 drivers / owners max!

Dave STOCK however informed me, that on a first come, first served basis, Taxis COULD surrender their plate early, so mines up at the end of this month.

That gives me a year to sort out the good systems from the 'ok' ones.

So to any London drivers affected by this, unless you own a Metrocab or a Euro3 compliant Taxi, get your finger out the clocks ticking.

Green badge, you hit the nail on the head, I was at the PCO as well and was astounded at the lack of people there!!. Mind you, it won't stop the driver's sitting in cafe's getting at all wrong as usaul!.

I think red ken has took a right liberty with you guy's, my mate has just got rid of his TX1 which he has had from new and did not need changing and bought a TX2.

You have to do the Knowledge first.

I find it hard to believe that there wasn't stronger opposition to this imposition. It leads me to ask the question at what price would there have been total opposition? Would it have been at 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 grand? I thought it was only in regulated areas that the trade grovelled before the administration?

The idea to make London a low emissions zone was made by Brussels opposed to the GLA.

What I would say, we're one of the first, many more will follow, and that may include most large towns and city's up and down the country.

Remember when London sneezes, the rest of the country catches a cold.

So anyone reading this in Birmingham, Manchester or Glasgow, It will be on your doorsteps before you know it, and perhaps Euro 4 at that!

I agree, but that makes it worse, you lot can afford it.

Maybe if your lot had put up a better fight, then it would have helped out the rest of us.
