Scheme for private hire minicabs to have signs
Swindon council has announced that it is looking into forcing private hire minicabs to carry more obvious signs. This comes after Coun David Glaholm (Lab, Penhill) put the idea to the council earlier this month.
Under the plan minicabs would be forced to carry signs identifying them as private hire cars. At present private hire minicabs must show a permit on their number plate.
He said the idea of more obvious signs came to him when he saw an unmarked mini van pull up and offer a group of women a ride home late one night in the town centre. Coun Glaholm approached the van to ask about signage but was told that there didn't need to be any.
At the moment mini-cabs have to carry a yellow permit on their number plates but did not need side signage. According to a council spokesman most firms voluntarily have signage on their vehicles as it is good advertising.
