A PRIVATE hire cab driver could lose his licence amid claims he screamed racist abuse at two Asian women outside Braehead shopping centre. The man allegedly swore and shouted offensive taunts at the women as he dropped off a female passenger.

Licensing officials have been told the driver made two racist remarks about passengers in another cab after he was involved in a road rage incident near the Ikea store. It is claimed the driver became enraged after the other vehicle failed to signal at a roundabout.

His shocked passenger lodged an official complaint about the driver's conduct and he will now face a private hearing over the allegations. Enforcement officers have been told the two women were travelling in the back of the other taxi.

A report before Renfrewshire Council states: "The driver of her (the complainer's) private hire car shouted 'you dirty black b*******'. "The complainer was stunned at the driver's statement, but did not say anything. A few minutes later, her car stopped at the rear of the taxi that had nearly collided with her car and she then saw two Asian women get out and look over."

It is alleged the driver then swore and again shouted similar racist abuse at the women. The council report adds: "The complainer then told the driver he should not be saying things like that and he replied 'if you came from where I come from then you would understand'. The passenger, who was picked up in Renfrew, submitted an official written complaint about the incident.

Council officers have already interviewed the driver, who admitted he swore but denied making any racist remarks. The man, whose name has been withheld pending the outcome of the hearing, claimed he did not see the two Asian women in the taxi. Councillors will consider the complaint at a private hearing in Paisley on Thursday.

The investigation comes two months after taxi drivers at Glasgow Airport were warned they would have their licences revoked if they did not improve their manners. Two drivers were suspended in February for leaving passengers "scared and upset" by their aggressive conduct.

A council hearing heard how the passengers were subjected to verbal abuse and intimidation. Both drivers were angered because they were asked to take their fares on short trips from the airport to Paisley and Johnstone, instead of further afield.

He should blame all the extra hours us guys have to work to pay for the shiny new cars & uniforms the council insist on

I wonder how the media got a hold of this as I dont think they are in the habit of checking the agenda page on Renfrewshire Council's website ?

He should just claim the committee are racist and judging him by the colour of his skin. In this country your colour is determined by your social status and not by your race. A white man driving a taxi is blacker than the black man. What do you think the committee see, someone white, I doubt it? If you are black or Asian you’ve got diplomatic immunity, you just pull the racist card. The PC council will hang you just to claim they’re not racist.

BTW if he did say it he’s a complete pri**. What he needs is help retrained and re-educated, a financial beating won’t change his views they will just become more entrenched.

Reading through this, it would appear on the face of it, its the passengers word against the drivers.

It would seem neither the alledged victims or the other driver have bothered to make anything of the alledged incident.

A little thing called corroboration would come into it.

When I was at school in Edinburgh, if you called someone a 'black' so and so, it was generaly aimed at an individuals personal hygeine, opposed to someones colour.

How times are a' changing.

How about self-incrimination by answering the complaint in the first place? Do you think councillors consider your right not to answer the complaint or no corroboration?

I can just see it now. “Sorry scum bag cabbie we don’t have any evidence or independent witnesses and you do have the right not to answer if you so wish.

No case to answer!
