Interesting idea in the letters page in the Dundee evening paper.

But since the WAvs are dearer to run, shouldn't it be the saloon cars that have thieir hours restricted?

I suspect the letter was written by a saloon driver.

Too many disabled access taxis

A LOT has been written about over-crowding of Dundee’s taxi ranks. I put this down to the disproportionate number of disabled access taxis flooding the streets.

I’m sure these are a Godsend to wheelchair-bound users, but most folk are able-bodied and would much rather have a saloon car.

I am fed-up of having to crouch and scramble my way to the back seat of these glorified vans and then have to reach out and struggle with the huge sliding door while the driver sits in his seat.

I suggest that van-style taxis registered in the first part of the year (ie 03, 04, 05) work Monday, Wednesday and Friday and taxis registered 53, 54, 55 etc work Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

They can all have Sundays off.

Normal saloon cars will be permitted to work seven days. — Humpy Backed, Dundee.

sounds to me he is afraid of the competition, if he is a four seater saloon who cant sell his plate thats his problem, how can he compare to a seven seater non stob cab, there has been a lot of bitching from the saloon owners, they got there corporate plates what are they moaning about?

No difference across here

I was in Dundee about 3.30 on Sunday morning and there didn't seem to be many people looking for taxis compared to usual, so was the rush earlier?

Taken from another paper

Council must step in

I AM driver and owner of a disabled taxi in Dundee, and do not agree that disabled people dodge my taxi for saloon cars.
I do not have a problem with saloon cars, but many are operated by elderly drivers who work for a few hours a day and on a Friday and Saturday.

They do not supply the city with a 45-hour week like I do.

If disabled taxis were to operate only on alternate days as suggested, I would not be able to make a living.

It is the responsibility of the council to get this issue sorted. — Disabled Taxi Driver.

fae fife, there didn,t appear to be any rush hour, there was a lot of double decker buses laid on to ferry punters to and from the town centre ,
the dundee punters got friends/family to drop them off etc, i got three fares off the show on sat,and two on sunday, my sunday money was down on a normal sunday, the fares i did get all went home because the were cold, this left the nightclubs quiet which in turn left us out of pocket

the saloon ops are writing a lot of letters about the new wheelchair mob,
i think they are just sick about their corpoate plate situation, most of them are coming up for retirement and thought they could sell their saloon plate ,but by granting the corporate plates complete with wheechair only vehicle policy ,the value of the plates are 0
,its not all bad news ,now they are proud owners of wav plates they can join the dwta
