Taxi drivers staging city protest

About 200 taxi drivers have taken part in a protest through the centre of Londonderry.

They want action against illegal drivers and restrictions on the number of licenses issued to legal drivers.

The Taxi Drivers' Initiative - which organised the demonstration - said the industry was being crippled by the growing numbers of taxis in the city.

Paul Leonard of the initiative said office owners would have to take more responsibility over who they employed.

"They are saturating the industry with taxis and unfortunately we are struggling on a daily basis to make a living," he said.

The drivers also handed in a letter of protest at the Driver and Vehicle Testing Centre in Newbuildings.
