If someone did a runner, a few months in time you got him back in the cab, after you set off you realise this is the runner who ran on me, its all coming back, could you be done for overcharging if you asked for the meter fare plus the last meter fare he did a runner on

In my view no, and I would do the same.

If any LO said anything you could just say it was a delayed payment.

I have had this happen a couple of times and as soon as I have rcognized them I have asked for the fare up front, then stopped and said "thank you very much that was for last time" now if you would like to go anywhere else I would like the current fare up front too.

The look on the faces is comical as they realise they have been caught.

Of course you couldn't be done for overcharging in theory, but if the person objected and denied it was him then you could have a problem.

"doing a runner" is now a Criminal Offence - it's called Bilking and every cabbie should ensure that their local force are aware of it and fully prepared to enforce it.

I had a runner about three years ago for a £30 fare and they wandered into my cab late one night; recognising them immediately and having reported them to the Police some years before, I locked the doors and drove like the clappers to the Plod Shop and they were more than happy to pay up :D

The last runner had wasn't so much of a runner

we got to the end of the journey, that will be 5.40 please, woman punter, says sorry, I'm ever so sorry, sorry for what I said, well sorry I can't pay you, then out she got, watched for the house light, rang the coppers

It was then my hero appeared, a young lad in a transit cop van, bright and breezey, explained the situation, ok, I go and pick her up

mean while down at the local nick making a statement, time consumming I know but its got to be done
The young coppers says to me, I am going to carry out and charge her for this offence, you see my Dads a taxi driver, I need to protect my dad and all you lot out there trying to make an honest living, straight into magistrates court, got fare plus a bit of compensation, we need more coppers who have dads as taxi drivers.
