Taxi Driver Online

I see a lot of posts PH V Hack and was just wondering whether I live in the only area where there is only one badge? Where I live there is only one licence and you can then drive PH or Hack. To drive a PH here you have to have a Hackney Licence.

The meter rates are the same - the only differences are 1. Hacks can sit on the ranks and 2. PH can refuse to take a PAX on the grounds that they are under the influence of alcohol! 3. PH's are not allowed to have illuminated top signs. 4. PH are treated as Hackney of the meter is on so the PH's can drive down the one street that is restricted to Hacks if they put the meter on!!!!

I'll admit over the course of any day I jump between PSV / PH / Hack and onoccassions do forget which one I'm in!

I think about a third of councils have dual licenses.

Me, I think it should be 100%.

Single tier licensing, vehicles, no more PH? OK, I'll go for that, providing there's no lowering of standards. The London Standard sounds good, knowledge, 25ft turning circle, (SO essential) et al.

Brighton has two badges one knowledge

Fife Council - 1 badge allows you to drive both public and private hire

I think if a person obtains a hackney drivers badge then they should be allowed to drive P/H vehicles as the presumption is that in most cases some form of knowledge test would have been taken in order to obtain the badge. Many councils have a dual badge licensing system and as long as the higher standard is achieved then that should not be a problem. Under current legislation Private hire badges are not linked to hackney carriage badges and if a council refused to issue you a private hire badge on its own then they could well be in for a shock if they tried to pursue the event through the courts. Needles to say there has never been a court case on the matter so perhaps its about time we had one considering the tinkering around the edge's brigade like nothing more than the legal system to sort out taxi legislation.

I know, and there's a growing concensus that stakeholders will be working together during the New Year for more tinkering

But as Primary legislation is about as likely as the 'Frog and Peach' becoming a successful restaurant, small uncontencious changes are all you are likely to get.
