I suspected Seaforth may be out, so the person Mr T mentioned may have been quite within his legal right to ask for whatever fare he wanted.

In respect of 70 pounds an hour I think it is irresponsible for a journalist to quote figures that far exceed reality.

SARA Morrison and her university friends have been sworn at, called names and shouted at by city cab drivers.

Cabbies only interested in long and lucrative journeys often refuse to take the students on short hops across the city, even women travelling alone and late at night.

And those that accept the fare often grumble, accuse them of being lazy and on one occasion have tried to overcharge them.

Sara, 20, who is in her final year of a geography degree, said: “We have problems all the time. Some of the drivers are just vile.

“I have been called names, been effed and blinded and shouted at by drivers. It gives a really bad impression of Liverpool.”

Another university student was told “f*** off you lazy cow, walk” by one foul-mouthed cab driver.

The teenager had been returning to Liverpool after a weekend at home in Manchester on a wet Sunday night in January.

When she asked a taxi to take her, and her heavy bag, back to her accommodation in Greek Street she was refused and endured a foul-mouthed tirade.

A visitor from Switzerland was charged £50 to get back to Walton from the city centre – more than he paid in airfare from his home country.

A Reds fan from out of town was told by a driver that there had been an explosion at Lime Street station and he would have to catch a train from Manchester.

Later when the passenger had paid the £50-plus fare he discovered the driver had lied.

Depending on exactly, where in seaforth, it is more than 4 miles outside Liverpool, so i think he was quite right charging what ever he wanted. I don't know, cities drivers. you never know where you are or were you are going, four miles outside of your boundary is the back end of Crosby.

now then here is one for you, are you allowed to charge extra when you have gone 4 miles past your boundary, or is it still legal if you're nearest boundary is nearer than 4 miles when you drop light.

The legal fair at that time of night is about £15 , that driver would probably have got 20 with his tip.

The Grand National which is held at Aintree racecourse sits on the boundary of Sefton and Liverpool, in fact the majority of the racecourse is in Sefton, if a Sefton cab picks up at the National and takes passengers into Liverpool he travels more than four miles outside of his boundary and is entitled to charge more, but if a Liverpool cab picks up passengers going into Liverpool he can only charge his normal rate ,

Having spoken to the journalist who penned this article I can confirm that the article was written in good faith and the information in respect of £500 earning per week, the £70 per hour in the early hours of Sunday morning and the obligation to accept any fare, however short or long, came from Mr Dereck Hughes of Liverpool licensing.

The £500 earnings by the way is for a 40 hour week and that is after you have paid your expenses.

I suggest Mr Hughes takes a trip into the real world and at least tries to rectify his mistake by supplying accurate details of the points he raised.

Very good JD you really are a enquiring journalist .
That 70 pounds an hour, might give the impression, to the more sinister members of the Saturday night revellers. That taxi drivers, are running around with substantial amounts of cash. I think it is quite misleading and dangerous .
That statement “obligation to accept any fare” Gives the green light to any over aggressive , vomit soaked drunk. That they can, demand to be taken home.
I have never heard of Derek Hughes . Perhaps your right some one in Liverpool council might come on here , Tell us how he came by these figures , why he chose to let them be published. Perhaps the echo could print a some kind of retraction, before some one gets hurt. Regards streetcars

I have sent the following email to Mr Hughes at Liverpool licensing, hopefully he can explain his reasoning for the figures he gave?

I understand you furnished journalist Mary Murtagh with the following details for an article she wrote in respect of Liverpool Taxi drivers overcharging customers?

The information attributed to you is as follows.

1. "City black cab drivers are obliged to accept any fare, however short or long, if they are displaying their ‘for hire’ sign and the fare is no more than four miles over the city boundary."

2. "The average takings for a city taxi driver are approximately £500 a week."

3. "During the early hours of Sunday morning cab drivers can make up to £70 an hour taking revellers home."

In respect of item 1, can you clarify if your comments were restricted to standing and plying for hire on a Taxi rank and standing and plying for hire in any street? Or did they include a vehicle displaying its for hire sign while in motion?

In respect of item 2, Mary Murtagh suggested that the figure you quoted of 500 pounds was for a 40 hour week and was net of any expenses or rental payment to the owner of the vehicle. Can you confirm this to be the case and if not, can you please tell me how you arrived at the figure of 500 pounds and what working conditions and outgoing's were taken into consideration in reaching this figure? Can you also advise me if the figure of 500 pounds relates to an owner-driver or to a driver who rents a vehicle on a daily, evening or 24/7 basis?

In respect of Item 3 can you advise me how you arrived at the figure of 70 pounds per hour and how many jobs per hour both long and short, it would take to earn 70 pounds and what mileage would be incurred?

The story referred to £500 pounds takings, and I take that to mean gross fares before any rental or running costs.

Thus the figure didn't seem particularly high to me, bu of course I suspect many people would construe 'takings' in another way.
