Good grief man, didn't oil price shocks cause two world recessions under OPEC's watch?

The price of oil was fairly stable before OPEC.
Reply from T.
The Oil price shocks were caused when the OPEC negotiations failed and the freemarket took over. Oil prices stablelised under OPEC, pre OPEC the world economy was dependant on oil supplies that were in the control of a handful of Arab Kingdoms. OPEC brought consistant supplies of oil at predictable prices allowing unprecedented growth and developement in western countries. Without that cartel developement would have been far slower. Show me one economist that supports your claim that oil supplies and prices were "stable before OPEC".

If you want some facts about oil and opec, you would be well advised to read this.

What about the Liverpool plate cartel .
Taxi work has dryed up during the day . Loads of extra night buses. Private hire cars are flooding the streets .
Does the price of a Liverpool Taxi plate come down . No it goes up 58,000. Why because the members of the cartel decide when to sell plates and at what price . Who suffers the public and drivers . instead of a owner driver buying a newish cab, he makes do with a shed. He has to . If you ever go to Liverpool airport, Look at the state of the cabs. You tell me Quantity controls are a good thing (my arse) . Your the Amish boy .Streetcars
Sounds like a very good cartel, public services have improved, more buses, more PH's and the price of the plates holding or increasing. If the condition of vehicles is poor then get the LA to raise the standard. A thing is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for it. A drivers cab is the tools of his trade if their vehicles are as bad as you say they would be unreliable and maintenance would be high, Liverpool drivers must realise this and decide to use older cabs for other reasons. If they can raise £58k to buy a plate getting a vehicle on finance would not pose a problem.

The west should have put more into alternative energy sources, developed electric cars etc, but they didnt they relied on oil, it was seen as cheap, plentiful and controllable, a few puppet dictators here and there, redraw the frontiers, create a few new countries (eg Iran, Iraq etc). A new world order to bring prosperity to the west. Now we are starting to pay the real price of oil.

I posted that link because the second paragraph states.

The purpose of OPEC, as with any cartel, is to limit supplies in the hope of keeping prices high.

Is that the wrong assumption about OPEC and in particular Cartels and if so why?

Can you please tell me how many wheelchair accessible vehicles you have in your licensing authority and the total number of licensed hackney carriages?

The use of such words as cartels is intended to blow out of proportion the arguments raised by those who wish only to satisfy their own greed.

OPEC was instigated by the west to stabilise an eratic market. Not all cartels are bad. The EU is a cartel, a trading arrangement or agreement for the benefit of the members. It did away with trade barriers, quotas etc, it freed up trade between member states.

I have no interest in how many WAV or Hackney there are in any area, but I am interested in your involvement with B-Tech franchise. This site and PH Monthy have strongly supported the B-Tech, I just wonder why ?

I don't see any evidence of the west advocating an oil cartel but perhaps you know different? I do however have the text from the OPEC website which states the following about its creation.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is a permanent, intergovernmental Organization, created at the Baghdad Conference on September 10–14, 1960, by Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

The five Founding Members were later joined by nine other Members: Qatar (1961); Indonesia (1962); Socialist Peoples Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (1962); United Arab Emirates (1967); Algeria (1969); Nigeria (1971); Ecuador (1973–1992); Gabon (1975–1994) and Angola (2007).

The reason I asked, was because at the time you posted as Poole taxis in 2004 you told us you were the only person in Poole to have a Wheelchair accessible vehicle, this being a Vito. In 2004 the DfT Taxi and Private hire stats stated that Poole had only one purpose built wav and five mpv type vehicles out of a total of 72. This left 66 saloon hackney carriages, I was wondering if that figure for wavs had changed since 2004?

In 2006 David Lane of the Poole Taxi and Private hire forum said he welcomed the Btec as a positive move for all Poole Taxi drivers. It would appear you disagree with Mr Lane but do you know if he still holds the same opinion in respect of these Btecs as he did last year?

According to DfT figures Poole capped numbers in 1985 but I can't find any details of them ever having had an independent unmet demand survey? Considering they license you, can you tell me if they have ever had a survey since 1985 apart from the in-house survey they conducted in 2005?

I take it Poole is still capped to 72 hackneys?

In 2004 when talking about free issue licenses you said "Only a fool would refuse such a gift-horse." You should not criticise someone who takes advantage of the system because the system is wrong?

The system does need change but overnight solutions rarely work. The standards need to be set first, then work towards a single tier system. My point is that rules should be in place to ensure that plates only go to those that qualify. I am not against de-regulation but we need time to change and controls to ensure standards are maintained.

Do these past comments of yours from 2004 resonate with you and do you still subscribe to these views or have you changed your mind?

I don't have an involvement and neither does anyone involved in this website.

On the contrary, I thought it strange that you should come on here screaming and shouting about the turning tide of deregulation and making a big song and dance about it when the subject has been basically put to bed, in England and Wales.

Your thoughts in 2004 are somewhat at odds with your thoughts in 2007.
