HEADLINE: Campaign cracks down on taxi fare dodgers

A scheme to stop passengers running off from Preston taxis without paying has seen offences reduced by almost two thirds.

The multi-agency initiative encourages customers to pay an agreed deposit before the journey starts.

It has resulted in just six non-payment offences in the last four months, a 62% reduction on the same period last year when there were 16 crimes.

There were 60 reported incidents of bilking - making off from a taxi without paying - last year and many more were not reported.

PC Paul McClernon, who leads the police side of the initiative, said: "It's been a successful campaign as it has meant taxis haven't lost out and there's been a marked reduction in police time needed to tackle bilking.

"All it means is paying a deposit at the start of the journey and, at the drop-off point, you pay the extra cash or get a small refund if you've paid too much."

Mark Selley, treasurer of the Preston Hackney Carriage Association, said: "The results are positive and it's good to see the council and police are supporting us."

The campaign could now be rolled out across the rest of the Lancashire force.

That said, I wonder in how many areas that has the backing from the powers that be. :?

I take your point but this is one situation where the powers that be don't have a say in the matter.

I would advise every driver to get their money upfront if they feel the need.

In one or two experiences in the past it depends on the plod i.e whether they have been ripped off before.
