JD. if I remember rightly Liverpool used to refuse a licence if a person held a licence in another area....... they certainly still ask the question when applying and so do Sefton

There is no law against asking a person if they hold a license in another area but there is a law in respect of refusing a license to someone who is a fit and proper person. I suspect Damien Edwards knows this and also Mr Thompson, therefore I doubt very much that they would refuse a license just because someone holds a license in another area.

Regards

JD

I think over the last 10 years or so, they have learnt what they can and cannot do.

We remember it well and what a pointless exercise from start to finish. However it just goes to show that some people never learn because Gateshead Taxi associations have put forward the very same request to their local council. I wonder which bright spark thought that one up?

I'd always assumed that this was asked so they could contact any other relevant council in case the driver had a dodgy history; for example, he looses his badge in one area so applies to another.

Thus more to do with checking the driver's history rather than stopping him being licensed in two areas, although as Mr T says some LAs have tried it on in this regard.

I think the best solution would be, if you obtain a licence for one area you should be able to freely work nationwide, problems solved   or would they be, as drivers would get there licence from the cheapest area, IE Berwick versus Newcastle springs to mind

They would also tend to apply where standards are lowest, i.e there is no knowledge test etc.
I think that one's a non-starter.

And it's a bit pointless having a knowledge test at all if drivers could work anywhere with it.

dundee council issued some so called dual plates when we opened to wavs, these were to ops from fife who wanted the best of both areas, they had to have two meters and stick to both council regulations, the fife plates were dropped and the fifers now sit happily on the dundee ranks ,the cabs would have to go through two police tests , and if it was over five years old in dundee that would mean two tests a year ,not sure about fife , but it could add up to a lot of tests
