Taxi drivers celebrate as station rank cost reduced

TAXI DRIVERS in Newquay are celebrating after winning a 14 month campaign to get taxi rank fares at the train station reduced.

The Newquay Voice told in November 2002 how taxi drivers decided to boycott the rank because they felt they were being ripped off. Wessex Trains has finally given in to pressure and will be introducing a nominal fee to replace the £200 levied in the past.

Taxi firms were paying only £30 less than those who parked at the rank outside Plymouth Railway Station, which has a lot more potential customers.

As a result only 19 compared to the 34 taxi drivers in Newquay that paid the fee previously did so last year. Eight of them were from 123 Taxis because they had no other option, as there is nowhere to park outside their office in Cliff Road.

Wessex Trains will be introducing the nominal fee in the next few weeks, which will be backdated to January 1. As no taxi drivers have paid for the season ticket yet this year no money will have to be refunded.

Richard Griffiths, business manager for Wessex Trains in Devon and Cornwall, said: "What we are looking to do is to make a substantial reduction in the charge for taxi drivers at Newquay station. "We have decided to introduce this because Newquay Train Station is not as busy as some of our other stations. "There will be a small fee, which will enable us to have some control over who uses the spaces and the quality of service they provide. "Taxi firms will be written to about the changes in the next few weeks."

Newquay Taxi Association had called for either three and six month licenses to be introduced for the rank or for the fees to be drastically cut because of the lack of business in the winter.

Delighted Brenda Russ, chairperson of Newquay Taxi Association, who led the boycott said: "We think it is absolutely brilliant they have listened to us at last. "It is a fantastic result, it has taken us a long time but it is a better result than we expected. "We've had good support from the taxi drivers in Newquay to boycott the train station rank. "We'll now have to wait and see how much they charge us. "It was never worth £200 to park there, it is only worth having in the summer when there are direct trains. In the winter it is very quiet, they out priced themselves."

And well down to the lads at Newquay.

They didn't need a knees up with drivers coming from far and wide, they just discussed and came to a sensible agreement with the rail company.

See it can be done.

Experience of this trade of ours, and it's unions.

If the T&G had anything to do with it, it would have been mentioned about 500 times in the article.

Also the fact that it has come to a welcomed compromise between the drivers and the rail company, is clarification that the T&G had f*** all to do with it.

I hope you are right, and different areas act for the drivers, not their own self-interest.

It's just that it would be nice to see some evidence of it, every now and again.

oh that is staggering, when did you go to Newquay in winter then Nige?

not a great deal to fight for?

lacks a lot of convivtion does that.

where there is a will there is a fight there was one in Newquay and they won hurrah, a taxi drivers earnings in Newquay, is every bit as important as Brighton, Mansfield, London, Gateshead, Watford, Sussex,Wales, London and Dundee.

though I am relieved the size of the place, dictates the lack of brotherly support, it leaves us safe from the incomming support, though of course our weekness is the mass that come to work weekends that dont know the place.

though a stop is being put to that.

Last year, a lad who used to work with us moved down there some years ago. A little village called Quintrell Downs, 2 miles from Newquay on the line that serves Newquay, 2 trains per day in the winter.

hang on a minute!
station passes were a massive £200 for the 7 months of those 2 trains.

I actually visit Newquay for the World surfing championships and also know it well.

one year a high sided lorry got well and truly stuck under a railway bridge
which tend to be small in those parts

no trains for a month in summer

you said there was nothing to fight for I said there is!

here we have more than 2 trains a day all the year round, station passes do not exist and we can go with the taxis on the platform,

nowthen Nige the judgement on where there is a fight is not yours, but those of the trade in each area, you merely decide where you muscle in.

and that is your democratic right.

I resent that comment, it is neither factual or correct. I lead a branch of the T&G (as you well know) and I can assure you that I follow my members instructions, if their opinions contradict my own I always enter negotiations with THEIR opinions and therefore THEIR best interest.

Remember Brighton, the leadership followed the wishes of their members even though it went against T&G policy and you slated them for it, now you suggest that leaders of branch's don't listen to their membership.

B. Lucky
