Considering we have a number of limo operators among our subscribers I thought I would post this charitable story from Torbay.

Young carers get a lift from limo gift

Young carers from Torbay will be getting some VIP treatment today thanks to a kind-hearted couple and a limo company.

Squires Limo Hire Ltd of Torquay will be whisking five lucky young carers off for a one-hour trip in a limo around the Bay.

The trip was an auction prize, won by Sarah and Matthew Clarke of Torbay Bookshop in Paignton who then donated it to the group of carers.

The youngsters will be picked up from the Apollo Cinema in Paignton at noon and will enjoy a non-alcoholic punch en route as they take in the sights of the Bay.

After an hour-long cruise they will have lunch at Breeze's Cafe Bar at Torquay's Princess Theatre.

Cllr Cindy Stocks, children's champion for Staying Safe, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for young carers to have an exciting day out and I hope that they really enjoy the experience.

"The Torbay Young Carers Service offers young carers invaluable opportunities to have a break from their caring role, through fun activities and events, in addition to providing them with support.

"If any other local businesses would like to contribute in a similar way, please contact the Torbay Young Carers Service."

Lesley Williams, service manager for Torbay Young Carers Service, said: "We ran a competition through our newsletter, asking young carers to draw their ideal limousine and what it would have in it.

"There were some great ideas and very creative drawings.

"We were then delighted to receive this kind offer of a free limo trip, and I know the young people will have a great time.

"It is especially heart-warming to receive offers from the local community as it shows that people are becoming aware of the fact that there are children in Torbay, some as young as six years of age, who look after, or help to look after, members of their family.

"They all deserve to have a break and have some fun. A big thank you to Matthew and Sarah Clarke and to Squires Limo Hire for making this happen."

Young carers are children and young people who look after, or help to look after, someone who has a serious illness, disability, mental ill-health or is affected by drugs and alcohol.

The Torbay Young Carers Service supports more than 300 young people across Torbay aged between six and 18.

The service provides young carers with opportunities to have a break through events, trips and sporting activities.
