Vale driver loses appeal to get taxi licence back

Penarth Times

A TAXI driver's appeal against the Vale of Glamorgan Council's decision to revoke his operating licence has been rejected at two court hearings.

Magistrates sitting in Barry and a judge at Cardiff Crown Court upheld the decision of the council's licensing committee to withdraw the licence of Stephen Oliver, of Town Cars, Penarth.

Mr Oliver, of Glebe Street, was originally convicted of using a mini-bus while his licence was suspended due to vehicle defects. He was fined £100 and ordered to pay £250 costs.

The appeal courts further ordered Mr Oliver to pay a total of £1,250 towards council costs.

Licensing team manager Yvonne Lewis said: "The decision to revoke Mr Oliver's licence showed what a serious view the licensing committee took of his use of a vehicle which was subject to a suspension notice.

"The council welcomes the decision of the courts which helps send out a clear warning to all taxi drivers in the area that the council will enforce necessary legislation to safeguard the safety of passengers."
