Taxi driver raped me, woman tells police

Investigators appeal for fellow passenger to come forward

Detectives investigating a woman's claim that she was raped by a taxi driver are looking for a man who shared the cab with her before she was attacked.

They appealed to him to come forward yesterday as they believe he could have vital information about the crime, which was reported to police during the early hours of Saturday morning.

The man, believed to be white, aged about 24, 5ft 3ins tall, with short brown spiked hair, got into a taxi outside Cubes nightclub in High Street North, Dunstable, with the victim at about 4am.

It is thought that he was the first to get out of the cab in the Stopsley area of Luton, possibly close to Ashcroft Road. The 22-year-old woman remained in the taxi to continue her journey home.

She was then driven to an unknown location in Luton and raped by the taxi driver, she told police.

The driver then took her to the Lewsey Farm area before she managed to make her way home and alert the police.

Det Con Ian Clarke, the officer in charge of this investigation, said: "This was an extremely frightening experience for the victim. I would like to stress that the man who shared the taxi with the victim is a vital witness and may be able to help identify the taxi driver concerned and is not in any trouble himself.

"He has nothing to fear by coming forward and speaking to the police, but I would urge him to do so as soon as possible."

If you are the man who shared the taxi with the victim or if you have information about the assault, you can contact Det Con Clarke at Luton Police Station, in confidence, on 01582 394325, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

I can't believe that with CCTV now on most street corners that this hasn't been picked up on it.

Also if it was a licensed driver then the council must have pictures of drivers for the lady to look at.
