Councillor admits his sex shame; guilty of Attempting to sell woman for sex.

A DISGRACED councillor has admitted trying to sell a woman for sex.

Senior councillor Alan Burkitt, formerly of Beaconview Road, Charlemont Farm, West Bromwich, but now living in Milton Street, pleaded guilty to four charges of causing or inciting prostitution when he appeared before a judge at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday.

Burkitt, 47, was remanded on bail for medical reports and is due to be sentenced in the week beginning January 22.

The Sandwell councillor was arrested at his former flat in Beaconview Road in March.

Coun Burkitt, who represents Charlemont with Grove Vale ward on Sandwell Council, began his career on the local authority in 1996 as a Liberal Democrat but defected to the Conservatives three years later.

He was ousted by the Tories following his arrest and since then his attempts to join the British National Party have been rejected.

Before admitting the offences yesterday, Coun Burkitt had announced he planned to stand as an independent candidate when he comes up for reelection in 2008.

Coun Burkitt is a former housing officer who has been out of work for several years.

It was revealed in April that bailiffs had been sent to his former home because Coun Burkitt owed a year's council tax.

Apart from the police investigation into his activities, the councillor is also being investigated by the Standards Board for England, which could see him kicked off the local authority altogether.
