A MURDER inquiry is under way after a taxi driver was killed in Greenock last night.
The Tele understands Mark Fitzsimmons, 25, was stabbed at about 9pm in the Holefarm Road area while on a job for Inverclyde Taxis.
His bosses told of their shock this morning at learning of the tragedy.
Henry Glasgow, managing director of Inverclyde Taxis, said: “It’s a tragedy that a young man who was going about his work to provide for his family has had his life cut so short.
“He was well respected and was one of life’s genuine character and had a fabulous rapport with the office and will be sadly missed by colleagues.
“He has a partner and some young children and had worked with us for six or seven months. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time and we will be co-operating fully with the investigation.”
Another taxi driver, who asked not to be named, said: “I saw a taxi there with its lights on which was parked weirdly. That was about 9.40. I thought something was up then.”
The scene was cordoned off and police were conducting door to door inquiries this morning, while forensic teams conducted a finger tip search.
Detective Inspector John Dearie of Greenock police said: “Enquiries are at an early stage and we are anxious to speak to anyone who was in the area of Holefarm Road around the time of the incident.”

A post mortem examination is due to take place to establish the exect cause of Mr Fitzsimmons’ death.
