Seven injured in town centre smash

A taxi driver and his passengers were hurt after a collision in St Helens town centre last night (Thursday).

Four of the seven injured - including the driver of the taxi - were rushed to hospital with broken noses, facial and leg injuries.

A silver Mercedes collided with the minibus taxi at the junction of Chalon Way, Canal Street and St Helens Linkway at 11pm on Thursday (March 27).

Firefighters, ambulance and police attended the scene. It is believed that the car hit the minibus from the side.

The taxi driver, believed to be in his 50s, was hyperventilating and in severe shock. A female passenger, believed to be in her 20s, had leg injuries.

Two male passengers had broken noses and leg injuries. The other people involved, the driver of the Mercedes and two other occupants in the taxi had minor injuries.

Watch manager Mike Costello said: "The scene that greeted us was not pleasant, there was a lot of blood which we think came from the broken noses as a result of the impact.

"There was minimal damage to the Mercedes but there was considerable damage to the side of the minibus taxi."

A police spokeswoman confirmed that the incident was under investigation but no arrests had been made.
