Taxi driver threw out mum giving birth

AN outraged Burnley woman has branded as "cruel" a taxi driver who forced her to walk home after she started to give birth in his taxi. Miss Joanne Ormonde (28 ), of Albion Street, says she was told to pay the driver and walk home when she went into labour in the back of his taxi on Saturday afternoon.

"I begged him to drop me off outside my house," said Miss Ormonde, who gave birth to Riley five weeks prematurely minutes later. "We were at the top of my street, the baby's head was out and he refused to take me any further. He just looked around at me, demanded the £2.50 fare and told me to get out immediately," she said.

She struggled down Albion Street screaming for her partner, Mr Kevin Eckersley, while holding the baby in and managed to get to the house in time to give birth as an ambulance arrived.

She had been in Burnley centre with her mum when she started complaining of stomach pains, deciding to get a Hackney carriage home from outside the bus station with her eight-year-old son Bradley.

"I only realised about halfway through the journey what was happening," she said. "It was a terrifying experience and I'm just so happy that Riley is okay."

Both mother and baby, who weighed 5lb. 2oz., are recovering in hospital.

I do hope there's another side to this story. So far the driver doesn't come out of it very well.

Having been present at the birth of my little person, I'd hate to witness the same thing in the back of a Taxi.

It seems hard to believe that anyone could subject a woman who is giving birth to such callous act of human unkindness.

I would surely question this drivers credentials as a "fit and proper" person, assuming the story is accurate?

Now I ask myself: whats the hire charge at the start of the journey in a Burnley taxi ? How far do you have to travel to clock £2.50? And how much time would you spend in the taxi?


In Edinburgh, the meter starts at £2.50 on the weekend tariff-you wouldn't move from the spot.

The daytime tariff starts at £1.50, you would be out of the taxi in approximately 3 mins to clock £2.50.

Skull, As per usual your posts paint a clear picture as to the way you think.

I do not know any true taxi/private hire driver who finding themselves in that position would not have taken the lady either home or to hospital, and money would have been the last thing on their mind.

Whether this story is true or not is another matter.

The distance is about 0.7 miles. Ambulances are very quick in Burnley aren't they.

The incident is being looked into by Burnley licensing but I can confirm that at this moment in time the mother involved has not yet been interviewed. I can also confirm that the baby was born very soon after this alleged incident happened but as always there are two sides to every story.

I understand the lady concerned said she could identify the driver but considering no driver has yet come forward to exonerate himself and the local cab trade have seemingly closed ranks then the truth of the matter may never come out.

I don't suppose BTEC courses have reached Burnley yet but perhaps these BTEC courses should include a child birth unit just in case this sort of thing happens again?

I hope the driver has the balls to come forward before the council call him in, his actions could have put 2 lives at risk, and as JD says is he a fit and proper person, in my book no.

It must be me, but I'm not so sure I would give a monkeys. But then again I have a 24 hour help-line to someone who can advise me.
