Taxi Driver Online

I've come to the conclusion that in the interest of the public all private hire and hackney carriage vehicles should have mandatory taxi meters.

The few councils that currently give an option of either or could retain that option by drivers offering the punter the choice of travelling on or off the meter. Private hire operators could offer the same option if they wished.

Compulsory meters would also cut down, but not eradicate, unlicensed bogus individuals who prey on the public.

Just a thought but one worth considering.

I would say NO

If we do want to ensure all forms of passenger vehicles are licensed then we must have flexibilty, limo's for example, I do not think any customer would find any advantage in having a meter installed. Same for executive work, airport work which would usually be outside area (so not metered anyway).

I didn't say limos. I was referring to those vehicles that perform duties as taxis? Which to my mind excludes limos.

I think they all should have sealed meters, save maybe licensed exec or limo things.

The one slight issue I might have is having meters in licensed vehicles being driven by drivers that haven't done a reasonable knowledge.

If a limo operated under normal private hire conditions where the fare was governed by the distance travelled then they would need a meter but I think you might find that limos although licensed under the 1976 act don't operate that way.

A meter would be of no use to me. ALL my work is quoted for in advance and always goes outside my LA area.

I don't recall mentioning limousines in the original post because I don't believe anyone in their right minds would pay over a hundred grand for a vehicle to operate as a traditional private hire.

Limos may be licensed under private hire legislation but they are not used for traditional private hire as we know it.
